Ivy Tech Spring '10 Nursing Program Students

U.S.A. Indiana

Hey guys here is a new thread, now that we've started the program and aren't 'hopefuls' anymore!!

Did the powerpoints for the Nutrition lecture ever get posted to blackboard? I haven't checked yet.

so it's the end of week 2, how is everything going? how are you guys (and gals) doing? getting adjusted?

Okay, is anyone else freaking out about this bed bath practice thing next week? First of all, I don't own shorts and haven't worn them since I was in high school and had a good body! I have these horrible scars all over my legs from being pregnant and on bedrest (kind of like glorified stretch marks). I don't want anyone seeing my stomach, and can I PLEASE assume that breasts will not be part of the practice that goes on in lab??? It says, "Complete bed bath minus peri care." Well, my breasts aren't in my peri area, but I'm sure not whipping them out in class either! I mean, everyone has to learn, but I'm pretty sure that could be practiced on a manequin just as easily. I'm just nervous about the whole thing. I'm really body-conscious and I just wish it was on more of a volunteer basis because I'm seriously going to have panic attacks about it all weekend.

Uhh AnneMarie--I'm not even in the nursing program yet but your making me have panic attacks just thinking about that!!! :/ I am applying for fall 2010

Well don't let it scare you too much! I'm sure I read way too much into it (it's my nature--I can't help it!) It's probably going to be everything that's not covered with a tank top and shorts (which is what we were told to wear) so that will be fine. Not a big fan of having to wear a tank top and shorts in the winter when I'm pasty white and feeling even more self-conscious than usual, but then again, it's not a fashion show and I'm surely not trying out to be a leg model, so I suppose it's no big deal in the grand scheme of things. The program is fabulous and you will love it! I'll be sure to post when I figure out exactly what's going on! Eeek!

You got told more about it than we did in our section. All we were told was to look at the documents and bring what it says to. No details about the 'how' of it were told to us at all. Then again our lab session was cut very short this week because we had to interrupt it with the ATI session.

Don't sweat it. Last semester it was practice w/ a dry cloth. no water or anything. I was REALLY WORRIED and it didn't even end up being a big deal at all. No exposed parts of any kind. I was really relieved. and don't worry...people are going to be nervous and not paying any attn to ya.

How about this: just go to the back room and take the back corner bed. that way you can kind of hide a bit from everyone. You won't be right in the middle of everyone.

I promise it isn't as bad as you think.

Thanks AnneMarie. And I'm glad to hear that its not as bad as I can imagine it to be!! :)

IndyIvy, THANK YOU for the confidence booster! I was afraid I'd be soaking wet and all exposed! Whew! What a relief. And Chris, they didn't talk about it in our lab either--I only knew about it because I printed off the lab agenda for next week and it was on there. I'm wearing gauchos because they're the closest thing I have to shorts. I don't even know where I'd find shorts in January, so Hopefully the gauchos will do. They're cotton and really baggy, so I can roll them up at the bottom if I need to. I just hope I can pair-up with a girl. I wouldn't let a man bathe me in the hospital, so I'm not letting a man pretend to do it in nursing school! haha!

Well, I know most of you are at the Indy campus, but I still wanted to share my progress at the Kokomo campus. :) We had our first quiz and skills check-off in our Fundamentals lab class on Tuesday the 12th, the day after learning our first skills. Luckily it was over handwashing, standard precautions, and range of motion exercises, so it wasn't entirely difficult. I passed my check-offs and received an A on my quiz. On Wednesday the 20th, we had our first test in our Fundamentals lecture class over 6 chapters. I got a B on that test, which I wasn't too happy with at first. I felt really confident after the test and thought that I would have received a better grade. However, I have been telling myself that at least it was a high B and that I still did well. It's crazy how going through pre-reqs affects your perception of a "B", lol. On Thursday the 21st, we had our first test in Pharmacology. I received an A on that test so I was estatic.

Next week, we have another quiz and skills check-off in my Fundamentals lab class on Monday over transferring/repositiong/turning patients, restraints, and safety gait belts. On Thursday, we have our second Fundamentals test over 8 chapters (there is so much reading in this class!). Our next Pharmacology test will not be until the following week. I have learned so much already from my instructors. I still cannot believe I have only been in school for two weeks. It feels like it's been a lot longer with all the information I have learned! I am so thankful for this site, because I feel it truly prepared me for the workload in school. I do not feel as overwhelmed as some of my classmates since I came in expecting to do a lot of hard work. I have a study/reading schedule set which has also helped me to stay organized. I have been averaging about 8 hours a day of studying and reading during the week. Luckily I only work weekends, so that gives me ample time during the week for school obligations.

As long as I stay focused I feel I will do well. I ordered some extra study guides that should be delivered sometime next week, so that will give me extra practice and provide more ways for me to fully understand the material. I hope everyone else is doing well. The hard work we all put into our pre-reqs was definitely worth it!

Congrats on the great first two weeks Xyra!

Okay I don't understand these databases like ebscohost etc. I thought you could access online journal articles to read, but I can't figure it out. I found an article that sounded promising to use for the cultural paper but all I can get to is the citation, does that mean you have to go to the actual library at Lawrence to get the physical paper copy off the shelf to read it? I feel stupid but I don't get all this database crap. I could follow along and click on what the lady said to in the library orientation, but I guess I didn't really understand what I was looking at. Help!

You are going to have to stick with articles that have the PDF or html text if you are going to do it online. Chances are that the library does not have the original journal article. I sometimes go to advanced search and only pull articles with text to help weed through the junk. Good luck!!

Just ugh to this paper and all this work. Thank goodness I am enjoying the content or I would never be able to get myself to do everything. It has been the quickest 2 weeks ever.
