I've Had It! Nursing is NOT what it use to be!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am sooooooooo SICK AND TIRED of the CRAP being dealt with by us nurses! I am giving up nursing for good! Back to college for a new degree in a totally different career field where I can get the respect and appreciation for what I invest most of my time in these days. :(

I am TOTALLY disgusted with family members accusing me of doing wrong when I did NOT do anything wrong! I'm sick and tired of NOT getting any recognition for the GOOD things I do as a nurse! :o

I work three twelve hour shifts a week. In the process of working those 36 hours plus, I care for at least five to seven patients a shift (counting discharges and new admits before the shift is over). Mulitply those five (let's do the minimum here) times three days worked, and that's 15 patients a week...60 patients a month. Out of 60 patients, dealing with their family members complaints, the patients issues and sometimes complaints, the doctors and the other hospital staff involved with those 60 patients, a few strangers come along and make out like I'm the worse nurse they've ever laid eyes on. Do I get credit for the 57 plus patients who happened to like the care received by them from me? Oh noooooooo....just let ONE irate family member complain about something I did NOT do, or let a doctor complain they didn't get what they wanted when they wanted it, let me come into work and be the nurse blasted by unhappy family or patients for the care they've received all week (not from me by the way cause I've not been at work all week), and I'm NOT a nice nurse. Whatever!

I QUIT!!! Those people have walked on me for the last time! I am NOT their handmaiden. Heck, I'm not even respected as "the nurse", so why stay in nursing. Someone PLEEEEEEZZZZZ tell me WHY should I stay in this crappy disrespectful put the nurses down for everything that goes wrong field?

I don't think it has anything to do with God. It has to do with how people are raising their kids. My family was never religious, but if I had been rude, I knew what to expect from my mom..... Needless to say, us kids were on our best behavior in public:chuckle

mattsmom, we are a "family centered" facility and even we don't allow visitors during those times! 24 hour visiting is not family centered, it's stupid.

I am a pre-nursing student. I know that many of you go through hell everyday at your jobs. I think the abuse that you endure is universal in many industries. Corporate America has become very mechanistic and willing to destroy it's backbone (workers) for the sake of the all mighty dollar. A person's job security, whether it's professional or non-professional is dependent upon the whims of customers/patients/ clents, and when there is a complaint management would rather fire the employee than deal with the problem. There is no one to back the worker.

I worked for a major casino chain here in Vegas. I worked for the same hotel for almost ten years. Last year management anounced that they were going to eliminate our jobs and call it something else. We all had to reapply to do the very same job. In doing this the hotel could get rid of older employees and ones like me with 5 weeks vacation. I reapplied and was put on the end of the seniority list, on-call, graveyard shift. When it was close to finishing my so-called 90 day probation, I was fired because they said that my smile was inconsistant. In this town, when you apply at these casinos, they want the women to look like young barbie dolls and the men to look like Tom Cruiz. Las Vegas has become one big corporate whorehouse, and the whores that reside here are the corporate executives who continuesly try to think up ways to eliminate long term or older employees to save money.:(

I think there is a general lack of respect and reverence for just about everything and everyone. Politeness and courtesy seem to have disappeared. Nothing is ever right or wrong anymore. Everyone is out for themselves and if they are rude or hurt someone in the process, well that's just too bad.

There is no longer any distinction between public and private space. It is perfectly all right to discuss intimate details of your life whether you are at home, in a restaurant, on a cell phone, in a store or on national television. In fact, it's thought to be unhealthy if you refuse to discuss these things in public.

It is now considered wrong to require people to say the Pledge of Allegiance because it mentions God or to salute the flag because that offends someone else. Children are no longer taught that there are some things and some people that should be respected. The only thing that still seems to command respect is money and I think that is a sad comment on our culture.

you are soooo right Laura Lou, but did ya know that every session of congress opens with a prayer from a PAID preacher???Go figure! Congress is so fickle, I guess people in general are too.

Well, you should feel very much at home in nursing. Welcome. Believe me things are not that much different here. :stone

It is ALL about bottom line of the executives.

Back in the stone age when I took a lot of anthropology courses, we learned that one of the characteristics of ALL cultures throughout recorded history is the fact that older people complain about how their culture/world is on the decline and going to whatever version they had of hell or "to the dogs." That younger people "these days" don't respect their elders, have lost the "old" values, etc.

Have you noticed that they are even saying "Happy Holiday". or your "Holiday Shopping instead of Christmas.??? Where has our moral compass gone.?? It is Christmas, for crying out loud. grrrr.

Since when did a moral compass have ANYTHING to do with what the season is called?????????????????????????????

Oh, I thought it was Hanukah!!!!!!!! From a religion that predates Christianity.

Or it could be Kwanzaa.

Or the Winter Solstice - which also predates Christianity, but from which Christianity "stole" many of it's traditions.

Not to mention that research has demonstrated that Jesus was born nowhere near the "Christmas" season.

Please remember that there are some very moral people here that have nothing to do with your so-called "Christmas.

As far as I know, it is Christmas that we celebrate. It is a Christian religious holiday. My word you are testy! We can mention every thing else but Christmas. When everyone has rights, no one will have any. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and I don't see any other religious holiday not mentioned. Just Christmas. Don't take it so personal. We are all entitled to our opinion. This is just mine.

There is no problem with Christmas

There is no problem with Happy Holidays (which does happen to be more inclusive of the other great moral groups and religions - whose orgins may have as much or more right to the "Season")

My problem is equating the loss of this era's "moral compass" as having anything to do with naming of a season of the year. Especially when a many great number of highly "moral" people that could be that compass are excluded by the word Christmas but not by Happy Holidays.

And given that Christ was not born in "the Christmas season", I woder why Christians make such a brouhaha about a more inclusive phrase. Especially when one considers the "pagan" origins of the use of that season for Christmas.

The poster equating a 'loss' of moral compass with a different more inclusive phrase is the one that brought Christianity into the matter - not I. And s/he seemed quite testy about it, to use your phrase.

Please do not read anything into what I wrote that I did not say.

And by the way:

WHAT THE HECK DO YOU MEAN BY "WHEN EVERYONE HAS RIGHTS - NO ONE WILL HAVE ANY"? (Your words)

Exactly whose rights do you think should be eliminated so that the rest have some?

Just curious.

And what does all of this have to do with the topic?

PS . I don't celebrate Christmas - I celebrate Hanukah...along with the others of us that wish joy and peace for a beautiful holiday season.

Amen to that!!! You are soooo right!

OK that's it Fergus...I am coming to Canada...I like the way you guys think up there!!

I remember my grandpa lamenting my generation...and I was raised quiet, polite and industrious....compared to what I see today. He was sure I was on 'dope'. ;)

I guess it's human nature for us to wish for 'the good old days'.

Not all change is progress. Or as Texans love to say "If it ain't broke don't fix it". :roll
