ITT Tech shutting down all campuses nationwide

In late August, the U.S. Department of Education barred ITT (ESI) from enrolling new students who depend on federal aid and required the company to warn current students that its accreditation is in jeopardy. ITT also was told that it must increase its reserves from $94.4 million to $247.3 million, or 40% of federal student aid the company received in 2015.

The financial blow was too much for Carmel-based ITT to bear, so the decision was made to shutter operations, a move that will impact thousands of students and employees.

I have read that the Department of Education to forgive loans

I believe the loan forgiveness is only for Federal Student loans. They will still be responsible for the private student loans.

Let's make this clear: NO ONE is suggesting that any individual student of ITT tech - past or present- is a terrible person, stupid, inferior, whatever.

PLEASE separate that in your mind from the school itself and it's awfulness institutionally- speaking. This is NOT about personally calling individuals into question for their decision to attend, or not attend, ITT Tech. It is about the massive fraud and waste of the entire situation, and the terrible human 'collateral damage' inflicted upon tens of thousands of households across the country.

I agree. We can sit back with our years of life experience and see the numerous red flags from these schools, but the naive 18 yr old or young single mom who are first generation college students they see these "colleges" as a way out of their current socioeconomic lifestyle.

Yes, and if they paid any money out of pocket, that will be gone too. And I feel bad that, unless some transfer miracle occurs, they will also never recover the value of time invested.

It is so wrong that naive consumers are being victimized by predatory schools that charge more for a LPN or ADN program than I will be paying for accredited APN program.

Followup for any Michigan students that were affected:

Henry Ford Community college is going to go over the transcripts for ITT students and more than likely accept them for transfer into their RN program. I just got back from talking to them, and it looks like I can start classes next Thursday. Significantly cheaper, and they will more than likely jump me into second year, due to being an RPN in Canada. I suggest any student to contact you local colleges and see if they can put you in advanced placement and take your credits for transfer.

Absolutely! I couldn't agree with you more, NurseGirl! People who are already living in poverty and desperate for a "fast track" to a career in nursing see ITT's commercials during the day and are so easily coaxed into enrolling. I was watching my local news interview a heartbroken veteran who was attempting to get some answers...he went to the local campus and found it completely abandoned. His statement to the news reporter indicated that he felt like he had been targeted and coaxed into enrolling because he had GI benefits.

For profit higher education has been targeting military and their spouses for years. Everyone knows they do it and that includes Congress and POTUS. So far however no one has had the belly in numbers to do anything about it: Military Veterans, For-Profit Colleges, and the 9

As a follow up to this: I was a fly on the wall at a meeting this morning where it was mentioned that the higher education schools here in IN and the State Higher Education Commission are trying to come to a consensus to find ways to help the innocent victims of ITT- the students.

If it's happening here, it's probably happening in your state, too.

people need to be smart about paying for education. it saddens me that community college enrollment is down, but for all other types of university (state universities, private universities, expensive shady private universities) enrollment has been going up. People do not understand the great benefit of community colleges. I took all my nursing prereqs at a community college. then 5 years later all my premed prereqs. I think last year it cost me like... 2300 for a years worth of classes. You can't beat that. and No, schools do not frown upon community college credits.

Community colleges rock

It depends on the market. Schools may not look down on community college credits, but a growing number of employers refuse to hire nurses with anything less than a BSN.

Community colleges can also have years-long waiting lists. The school where my late aunt taught has had a 2-year waiting list for several years. For-profit schools usually had no waiting lists.

They are talking to Harrison College to find out how they can run a sucessful for-profit (commercial) school and have a 95% NCLEX pass rate.

I hope they close Platt and Virginia College next

Advice to ITT Students: Don’t Give Up!

I'm really proud to be on the faculty of ! I see many other non-profits placing similar programs in place to help ITT students- well done!

Fortis is ACEN accredited in Indianapolis. The BON gave them 18 months to improve nclex pass rates and get adequate staffing. They will be back fall of 2017 to see if progress was made.

This isn't a flag wave, but it horrifies me that some people walk out with debt in a dollar amount that exceeds the tuition bills I got from Duke University.

It's the predatory aspect that just infuriates me.
