Hi Pie! Or should I say Ms/Mrs. RN!! :) I have a question for you: since you have just taken NCLEX, is there any advice you can give me for how you stayed calm during the exam? I'm taking it Friday and I have major butterflies!!!

I took the test 3 times & passed on the third time. I rescheduled it AT LEAST 10 times! I think this was due to anxiety over possibly not passing, & not really wanting to face it, & partially feeling not ready because at the time, I was so focused on reading my book, which is fine, but I had not really been doing practice questions. Toward the end, I started doing practice questions, as per Suzanne4 & my mother-in-law! I think that doing practice questions on a computer really helped, because it gets you in the mindset for the actual test. I think that helped a lot.
I did positive affirmations. I wrote them on my math conversion cards, so while I was quizzing myself, I would also have to say whatever affirmation I had written on the card. If it's possible, I would also suggest taking a drive to the testing center & actually going into the room to get a feel for what it will be like when you're there. The whole thing is such high security, that alone is enough to send one off the deep end.
This time, I actually slept! I was in bed & asleep before 8pm. The first time, I didn't sleep AT ALL, not even 5 minutes! I cannot remember for the second time.
Then, TAKE YOUR TIME!!! Some people have said that they whizzed through 75 questions during their test in 45 minutes. That does not work for me, & if I was going that fast, it probably would be due to anxiety. The first time, I had 75 questions & finished in 50 minutes, if not less. The second time, I did 265 in 2 1/2 to 3 hours. This time, I had 75 & was finished in roughly 1 1/2 hours.
AVOID negative NCLEX talk: "So-and-so took his/her test yesterday & failed, he/she said it was REALLY hard." This stuff FREAKS me out! I would get sooo caught up in what someone else said that it literally took over me.
BE POSITIVE. I told you I did the positive affirmations. I read something about the power of positive thinking, which is why I started writing those affirmations. BE POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! I would say them in my car on the way to work. I set my cell phone up with positive affirmations so that every 2 hours it would alarm with one :) Good luck & THINK POSITIVE: I can do this. I am giong to do this. I am going to pass NCLEX on Friday. I will be a nurse on Friday. I am ready for this test. I am prepared. Good luck.
One more thing. I just read your post to Suzanne4. Another piece of good advice that I read on this site was not to study the night before. This time, I was going to try to study until around 5pm or so. But, I told myself to leave it alone. Mainly because I KNEW that if I skimmed my book & was not able to remember something that I had read from the previous weeks, I would be like: "Oh man! I don't remember reading any of this! I wish I had rescheduled!" I know this would have freaked me out. I did this on the first & second time. The second time, I actually took a 180 question Readiness test at around 8pm---the night before my test. I got a 57% on it! Guess how I felt after that...
