I've seen quite a few threads where people talk about getting an iTouch or PDA to use for nursing school and clinicals and I'm wondering if it's really something I should be looking into getting.
At first I thought of doing it the "old school" way. If I needed to look up information I would use the books I had to pay for.
How many people use an iTouch and how many do it the old fashion way and use the books you paid hundreds of dollars for?

I have the iPhone and I love it! We had the choice of either buying a three book set of Tabers, Davis Drug Guide, and Diseases and Disorders for $115 or for $140, we could buy the code for all three of those books for our iphone, blackberry, etc. I bought the software and I really love it! Saves you from having to lug all those extra books around and you can easily take it with you to clinicals and have it right in your pocket. If you want to look something up, you can easily and quickly. Also the ap had those three books, plus Medline journals and the Davis Lab and Diagnostic program as well. It is really helpful!

I have a PDA because it is required by my nursing program. They had a grant and were able to give us all Nursing Central for free. I LOVE it, everything is on it, drug guide, diseases & disorders, medical dictionary, etc. At clinicals it's so much easier to use than carrying around books and I use it to study on my down time when I have a few free minutes (on the bus, at work on breaks, etc.).

Old School Drug book i found was easier to use than ipod (and faster really)
For general info (most computers were taken) you ipod/iphone is a pretty critical if you have no idea what something is
this is on the clinical floor btw

My school has the same requirement. We have to have a PDA (iPod preferred, but any other PDA is fine) with skyscape software installed.

iTouch x 100! Love having all those references in my pocket at any time. And not just at clinical either. Sometimes during lecture I'll hear something that I am curious about and I can just quick-like-a-bunny look it up on my iTouch. Also great for taking over to friends' houses, because they will inevitably tell you what drugs they are taking and I always love looking them up!

I love my touch for on the go and taking the bus. But I have to admit that I perfer books at home. There is also a recent study that determined ibooks take longer to read.
I thought the same thing at first when I saw people say this, but then I got to thinking: my school requires textbooks, scrubs, stethoscope, and tons of other things. I don't expect them to pay for these requirements, why should I expect them to pay for a PDA if it's required.
On a side note, thank you for all the replies. I think it's time to start searching for things to sell on eBay so I can buy a iTouch!
you can get a used one off of craigslist for 100 or less, but if you can get a used iphone with at least 8 gigs of space (the benefit here is the camera and voice recording) that comes jailbroken so it does not have to be used as a phone (150-200).

Because it wouldn't be a one time cost, like a textbook.. My cell phone bill would be higher EVERY month.
