It pays to be a nurse.

I got pulled over tonight for running a stop sign. I was coming home from Recovery Room call and talking about work on my cell when it happened--mind you this was on a back road with minimal lights so it wasn't hard to do.

I guess it helped that I accepted what I did ("mea culpa") and was preparing to give my DL and registration when he noticed my uniform.

"Never mind." The policeman said. "Just remember me if I'm ever in the hospital..."

He let me go.

I must've done something right in my life to have this "freebie".

So..yeah...it pays to be a nurse......

A coworker RN of mine was pulled over on the way to work the other morning by a state trooper. Made no difference; he ticketed her for speeding anyway. I might add that she is a cute and fit 24 year old. Maybe troopers are harsher... OR she just got unlucky!

i guess you got lucky.

in more ways than one.

You were lucky to get positive attention from law enforcement instead of the opposite.

Well I am a nursing student, and a guy (LOL). And I too got a freebie. My brake light was out and the cop pulled me over. I have my stethscope on my rearview mirror, and (Im paraphrasing) he said he didnt want me to see him in the hospital and remember I gave him a ticket, and he talked about how he respected the medical community (I didnt get a chance to tell him I was a student nurse). So he let me go with a warning

I'm honestly curious about this, since I've seen it in other threads on here about similar topics...but what is your steth doing hanging from your rearview mirror?? I can only picture that being cumbersome, and view-blocking. Mine stays in my locker at work, but if I did take it home with me, that's about the last place I'd think to put it?

Amusingly, both officers implied that they'd have no such compunctions about ticketing a physician... :p

Is it terribly wrong that this made me smile on this Monday morning? :)

The deputies in the county where I work won't usually ticket the nurses from the hospital unless the offense is really over the top. The state troopers are another matter. They would tickect their own mothers. (And a couple of them have done just that.)

You can always tell when someone is a nursing student - they like to hang their steths from the rearview. Not sure why - maybe it makes them feel like nurses already? Maybe a status thing? Maybe so they won't forget it? What we know now is that the heat/cold/heat variances will break that thing down.

I was on my way to clinical once, with my uniform and nametag on, stethoscope on the seat next to me, and I got pulled over in a speed trap right next to the hospital. I got ticketed. Guess it wasn't my lucky day :o

I have never gotten a ticket in or out of uniform- I always smile and admit to what I did instead of making excuses-- I mean come on, how many excuses do you think they have heard!

I really think it's wrong for police officers to not ticket someone just because they are a nurse. I also think it's wrong for them to not ticket each other, their relatives, their relatives friends, their friends, girls/guys they think are cute, etc.

It is amazing to me that so many people accept this practice as ok.

Police give tickets to maintain safety on the road. If you are not driving safe, you should get a ticket.

Are you a safer driver because you are a nurse, or because your uncle's best friends father is a cop and gave you a PBA card?

Sorry, I don't think it's right. This only encourages unsafe drivers to continue their unsafe behaviors because they have connections. It's wrong.

Apparently you have never driven through a town where a speed limit sign is hidden behind a big bush or the police cars are camoflaged so drivers can't spot them. Where I grew up and and live now the county commisioners and city council regularly rake the sheriff and police chief over the coals because the revenue from traffic fines isn't keeping up with expenses. One time a property tax increase was very publicly blamed on a reduction in traffic fines during a three year highway project that slowed traffic down to a crawl.

Traffic fines, particularly speeding, are huge cash cows. While I agree that police shouldn't show favoritism, don't kid yourself that tickets and fines are given for your own good. They are a source of revenue and the last thing they want to happen is have that source dry up.

They also give tickets to make quotas or to just be @ssholes who like to abuse the power they have now because they were king of dorkville in high school (nothing against dorks)!

I don't think anyone abuses traffic laws and safety because they don't expect to be ticketed by the police. That's a tad bit reaching, don't you think??
