I got pulled over tonight for running a stop sign. I was coming home from Recovery Room call and talking about work on my cell when it happened--mind you this was on a back road with minimal lights so it wasn't hard to do.
I guess it helped that I accepted what I did ("mea culpa") and was preparing to give my DL and registration when he noticed my uniform.
"Never mind." The policeman said. "Just remember me if I'm ever in the hospital..."
He let me go.
I must've done something right in my life to have this "freebie".
So..yeah...it pays to be a nurse......
I had an old farm truck without plates that I was using for a bit and praying noone noticed the tags out of date by a few years. Sure enough one guy did and pulled me over. Saw my gear bag and shook his head gave me a warning and off I went.
That spring I was fishing in a park where the offroaders ride. You know atvs and motocross bikes. I hear the unmistakable crunch of a wreck over this hill and investigate. I had my gear bag in the new truck and got the patient situated called for dustoff and helped load him up. When I got to work the next night I had a big red letter on my locker saying to go to PICU. It was his 14 y/o boy who I had worked on. Big hugs and laughs once they said he would be ok.
As a side note we all go target shooting and play paintball/airsoft together now.
On my way home one night on country road, slightly over the speed limit (doing 100kph in a 80 zone), when a car starting driving very close behind me.
What did I do? Pull over and let him pass?
OH no, I wanted to get home so I sped up..... Little did I realise it was an unmarked police car.
Next town he puts on his blue lights and pulls me over:
"Sir, do you realize that you were doing 150kph which is almost twice the posted speed limit?" (Driving at twice the speed limit qualifies for an automatic suspension of your driving license
What could I do but say yes. Then he asks me if I was in a hurry, stupid here says yes and as soon as the words were out of my mouth I think oh crap, time for a ticket. He ask me where do I work, I tell him I'm a nurse in the local city...
"OK Sir, Don't let me catch you speeding again"
SCORE!!! No ticket, but I think it was the slowest 5 miles I ever drove for the rest of the way home!!
I've gotten two freebies while in my scrubs. I also make sure to grab my stethoscope and drape it around my neck. Why yes, I ALWAYS drive with my stethoscope on, doesn't everyone?
My husband, on the other hand, got pulled over for driving 36 in a 30. The cop asked where he was going, and my husband said he was on his way to bring pain meds to a patient who was dying of cancer (he's a hospice nurse). He STILL got a ticket. That is COLD!
I really think it's wrong for police officers to not ticket someone just because they are a nurse. I also think it's wrong for them to not ticket each other, their relatives, their relatives friends, their friends, girls/guys they think are cute, etc.It is amazing to me that so many people accept this practice as ok.
Police give tickets to maintain safety on the road. If you are not driving safe, you should get a ticket.
Are you a safer driver because you are a nurse, or because your uncle's best friends father is a cop and gave you a PBA card?
Sorry, I don't think it's right. This only encourages unsafe drivers to continue their unsafe behaviors because they have connections. It's wrong.
I see your username is spot on. :)
Lucky, lucky.
I got a ticket because it was drizzling out and put my wipers/lights on "to be safe," Tennesse Highway patrol pulled me over because my tags had expired. On my way to my new job(first day on the job). Pulled into the parking lot and waited for this lady to pull out. She did....and kept on coming and coming besides my warning honks. Put it in reverse as fast as I could, and "BAM!!!" she hit me. Here come the town cops. He says, "Do you know your tags expired?" "Um, yes I do, here is the ticket I recieved 30 minutes ago." He said, "I can give you another ticket." I was flabbergasted! I said go ahead, I start my new job in 5 minutes, it's the day before Thanksgiving and I seriously doubt I will get my tags until Monday." Everything else was going wrong, right? Providence smiled upon me and I did not get another ticket, which would have been another $125. But my first day went well. Even took care of the lady that smacked into me. She was boo-hooing and telling the doctor how nervous she was....so I got to give her the Ativan he ordered. By the way, no dent in her blessed car, but ruined my fender.
One other time....got stopped for speeding. Again, Tennesse Highway Patrol. He looks in, tells me I speeding. Goes back to his car, gets whatever, calls whoever, etc......comes back and leans in and tells me how good I smell. It must not have been the bilious bile of nausea in my throat he smelled. Oh, I noticed his wedding ring mysteriously disappeared on his trip back to the car. I must not have had the right kind of perfume on, because I still get a ticket. Scary thing is this is on a hiway that around midnight, there is NO one around. The towns are 30 minutes apart with just hills and scattered farms.
I am afraid of Angels. They always start out in the Bible saying, "Fear Not" and, I am wary of the police who can magically make their wedding rings disappear.

i have no problem with cops using discretion in giving tickets but i do have a problem with a nurse talking on her cell phone and running a stop sign while doing so! what's up with that? and only one other writer even hinted at commenting on it. yeah jo, you got a "freebie" okay, but it might have been that you didn't kill someone or yourself, this time. well done.

yes, i agree with that. talking on your cell while driving is very dangerous. especially if it distracts you so much that you run a stop sign.
This happened to me recently also. I got pulled over for speeding. I was in uniform with a stack of files and all the junk a home health nurse carries around. I apologized for going too fast over the railroad tracks. He was very pleasant and went off to check my license, etc. Came back and told me to take care, the speed limit drops right before the tracks and have a nice day!
A few months ago I was driving my husband's car and he hadn't put the sticker on his plate. I had a uniform on and again, the cop set me free with a polite warning.
Cops and nurses get along pretty well, LOL.
Once in rural Nevada i was flying down the road. Well i wasnt flying, but actually driving the company car about 90 miles an hour. Well that Nevada State trooper didnt like that so much. He pulled me over, I had my flight suit hanging up behind me. When he saw I was a flight nurse, he asked me to slow down "just a little bit" and let me go.
I complied and slowed down to 80. Now i dont hardly ever speed anymore, but anyone who has drove through most of nevada, can understand how one goes so fast.
