Is it true LPN's are being phased out?

Published

I was planning to apply for an lpn program..but i've been hearing rumors that the lpn position is going to be phased out. can somebody clarify this for me? is it worth the risk?

These are some schools i was considering for lpn program

Bronx community college

Laguardia community college

hostos community college

Any info on any of these schools would be helpful

I wish I knew where this rumor started. I've been hearing it for about 10 years now--I just got my LPN last month. I don't know why people say LPNs are being phased out, but it isn't true. It can be difficult for an LPN to secure a position in a hospital, but LTC facilities, school nurses, and yep, even doctor's offices still hire LPNs by the drove, every day, all over the country and in Canada.

I don't see how they can ever "phase out" the LPN position as long as there is a demand for healthcare services--we are cheaper than RNs which means, if they don't need an RN for the position, they will hire an LPN to save the buck.

Go to school and get your LPN. You will find a job without any problems.

When I was in school the rumor was going around too. Some of our instructors said the rumor was rampant when they were in nursing school over 20 years ago.

Yes hospitals don't hire as many LPNs although one of our biggest hospitals here do team nursing with the team being a RN, LPN, and a tech. I currently work in a medical clinic and love it. LPNs are charge nurses where I work.

I heard the same thing when I was in LPN school in 1991! And yet here we all are, still working. It is true that most of the hospitals in this area don't hire many LPN's, but a lot of us don't want to work in a hospital anyway! Nursing is a great field. Good luck :twocents: !!

When I was in school 29 years ago, that same rumor was going around. I agree with the other posters, there is no way LPNs can or will be phased out, IMO. :smokin:

This is good to hear because I will be in the upcoming LPN program at the local community college and the Medical Assistant instructor called me telling me I should switch because I will not find a job.

Where I work, they let go of all the LPNs last year and are no longer hiring them. Sadly, some worked there for over two decades!

it's an urban myth with a touch of truth. lpn's have been phased out by some employers (typcially hospitals), but at the same time other employers are hiring more and more lpn's.

Why dont you go to school for LPN anyway and then get into a bridge program if they ever do phase LPN out.

Well the thing I have been told from my older LPN friends and my nursing instructors through LPN school is that every 10-15 years they try to phase out LPN's then come to realize that they really can't. Eventually the need for LPN's will pick back up. Just takes time.

Most Hospitals are not hiring LPN's. But LTC and rehab are actively hiring all the time. I think you will be okay doing the LPN program but make sure you research the job market in your area because it harder for new grads to find jobs.

I have heard these things too since school in 1998! But I have always had work ( CA) True some hospitals going to RN only

but this goes back and forth.

The really strange thing I notice is ALL nurses, RN's and LVN/LPN's dropping posts on here

they can not find work! what is that about??

pockets here and there maybe of shortage or overabundance? ecomony changes?
