Is this right?

So I've just received my pre-nursing schedule at my CC and I only have 5 classes which is Biology 1, Biology 1 w/ Lab 1, Communications, College Algebra, and English 101.

So is it just me or does this not look like a pre-nursing schedule to you all? I seriously thought I was going to get atleast A&P or an introductory to nursing class, but now I think my advisor has scammed me. Did everyone else schedule look like this when they were doing pre-nursing?

Please respond.

Ok so here's the deal OP.

You took 4 years of English in high school, most likely. You're still gonna need to take that at college. With math and science, usually when you sign up for a class, there is a course description that also lists prerequisite requirements to take that course. For example, at my college, in order to take college algebra, you needed a B or better in high school algebra. I suck at math, I had to take a lower math class first.

For A&P, the prerequisite was something like a b+ or better in high school biology, which I had, so I got to skip that and go right to A&P.

Like an above poster said, college works on building blocks. Almost like levels...you have to pass one level of a course or meet their standards before you get to the next level.

You probably didn't have a grade high enough for their requirements, and that's ok. We all start somewhere.

But seriously, do yourself a favor and look at your schools nursing program to see all required courses- you should see things like English, speech communication, a cultural elective, sciences and so on. Pick one, like English 2. Go look at it in your course description or catalog and it will tell you a description of the course and also that you need to take English 1 before you can sign up. All the classes have those prerequisites.

Sorry if that was redundant, but I hope it helps.

Looks like you need to go back to the advisor...

I did check the hand book for the curriculum and it seems to be biology isn't a requirement, but organic chemistry is and a&p 1 is on the first semester.

What are the requirements for O.chem and A&P1? I'd be willing to bet intro biology is a requirement for at least A&P and often O.chem as well. Nursing programs typically list their required pre-requisite classes, but keep in mind that each of those classes will often have their own pre-requisites.

But I'm trying to get my BSN.

They are pretty similar pre-req requirements.

But I'm trying to get my BSN.

This would only add more general education requirements needed for your degree

You have some serious misunderstandings of college-level course requirements and your level of preparation for those courses. You cannot continue to compare yourself with your friend. You are on your own path and may need to take a few more preparatory classes than she is. That's ok.

What is not ok is to defame a college or a counsellor simply because you do not understand the process.

You are NOT in your "first semester." You are in pre-reqs.

Maybe not, but he scheduled you for things you NEED

Yeah he made the schedule for me and didn't let me pick anything I wanted.

Biology is usually a pre-req for A&p as well as chemistry if I'm not mistaken. If you have a website where your schedule is, maybe try to click on the class for more info. It should tell you. I also think you need to stop comparing yourself to your friend. This isn't high school. If you are having issues with your schedule, you need to shoot your advisor an email or go see him/her. Obviously if almost every single person in this thread is in agreement, then the problem is your understanding of how your schedule works. Again, refer to your advisor. They are there to help guide you through your college career. They won't know there is a problem unless you speak up and say something and they will do what they can to ease your worries and help you understand.

I did tell him but he wouldn't listen. I even told him to place me in English 102 since I got a 26 in English on my act.

Maybe it isn't offered that semester? I don't know what college you are going to but there just seems to be miscommunication going on. If your advisor is unwilling to help you or doesn't understand what you are trying to achieve then you need to speak with someone else. At my college, certain classes aren't offered year round so you must take them when they are available. Your advisor may already have a projected course schedule to help you academically. Again, you should talk with your advisor again and find out his reasoning for not doing what you want him to do.

You are again referring to your high school career to somehow try to prove that you should be in higher level classes. It is unlikely that the adviser put you in classes willy nilly. There are pre reqs to all college courses. Some have to do with an entrance exam. Some have classes required in order to be enrolled. Your ACT score likely didn't matter or you woul have had the option for a higher level English couse. If the nursing program you wish to enter requires a full year of English courses, it doesn't matter if its ENG101/102 or ENG102/107 or whatever combo of English classes you take as long as they are 100 level or above. Before blaming your adviser, did you bother to look at the entrance requirements for desired nursing program? Because you are throwing him under the bus without understanding that virtually ALL nursing programs will require 1 year college level English, A/P 1 and 2, Microbio, 1 semester of college level math, a couple humanities course, some require patho, and some require communication, most require psych and so on. you nursing degree is not just full of science. You do still have to meet general ed requirements. And with a BSN you will have all the ASN requirements as well as the BSN requirements. So basically your schedule is a very normal first semester schedule. You will not get any nursing related course until you are actually admitted to a program. Right now you will have roughly 2 years of pre req courses.

If you feel like something is wrong, it is your job to tell you adviser. If you don't think they have done their job for you, then see a different adviser with your concerns. But please listen when we all tell you that you are on the right track and you have not be scammed into these classes. Everyones academic path is their own. Dont compare yours to your friends. I had to take both Bio 187 and Chem130 because my highschool Bio and Chem courses were too old when i started (5 years)
