Hi everyone!
I'm new around here...well not really, it's just that I have officially become a member and am no longer a lurker
I have been admitted to attend BYU in Provo, UT this Fall. The nursing department accepts applications to the nursing program both in the fall and winter semesters. I was planning on doing all my prerequisites in my first semester and apply to the nursing program to start in the winter semester. These are the classes I would need to take this fall (these are the only prereqs needed to apply):
Chem 285- intro bio-organic chemistry
NDFS100- Human Nutrition
Nurs180- Preview of nursing
PDBio220- Human Anatomy (w/ lab)
SFL-Human Development
Nurs102- medical terminology
It would be 16 credits total. I would really appreciate some advice on this. Is this nuts? Impossible?doable? I'm married and have a two year old at home, so how would the difficulty of the classes, plus the workload, plus the fact that I have a family to take care of work out (in your opinion)? Should I just take a whole year instead of a single semester to get the prereqs done? I would love to hear what you think! Thank you!

The only thing I would worry about is doing chemistry and A&P at the same time. Both will be extremely hard alone, let along together. Nothing is impossible, but remember you will need so much studying for those 2 classes. Good luck.

I totally agree with Mommyty, you can do anything if you put your mind to it......just know you will have a lot of studying to do because the chemistry and A&P classes are really like taking 4 classes.....just stay focused and you will be fine....

I agree with the others, you can do anything if you put your mind to it. I personally wouldn't take Chem and A&P together. It kind of also depends on what your commitments are outside of school.

My advisor wanted me to take chemistry & biology together, but with both of them having labs that would have been extremely difficult. I decided to take biology this summer & glad I did because right now I have a 97 in chemistry (too bad my other grades aren't that good). You probably could do it, but I personally would take them separately. I'm also taking 16 hours this semester.

You can do it, but it won't be easy. Chemistry itself was a struggle for me. If you're having any doubts, I would break it apart into two semesters. I wouldn't want my grades to suffer in the event that the struggle is too much for me.

I think it looks fine. My schedule was heavier than that this semester and has been fine. Most of my classmates are taking a schedule similar in load to yours with no problems. 16 credits is a pretty typical full-time load, though only you know how much you can handle.

I would say take it in different semesters! Chem is really tough and I haven't taken a&p yet but I've heard its just as grueling! And those other classes may not be hard but will probably be time consuming so that won't leave you much time to study and even less time with your family. It will Breaking it up will take longer but I think you would not only be less stressed but have better grades. Just my opinion though. But on the other hand you can do anything with hard work and determination so if you think you can do it then go for it!!! Good luck in whatever you decide!

Chem plus Anatomy was grueling this semester for me, however I'm getting an A in both. My other units are fluff GE though. I'd stay away from anything that might require a lot of homework or a lot of study time that would take way from your study time for Anatomy and Chem.

I took Biochem and APII in the same semester along with other classes for my major ( I took 20 credits that semester). I took it and got great grades. I say it depends on your work ethic. Of course, it is best to take it in different semester but sometimes that is not an option. I say really take a look at your home life and see what it best for you. Once you get into the clinical portion it won't get any easier. If you know that you have great study habits I say go full speed ahead.

With a husband and a 2 year old, I don't think this is a good idea. If you end up failing everything, you will be even further behind, since you'll lose a whole semester. Take it over 2 semesters. It will be worth the delay in applying to school.
Keep in mind these pre-req classes are not just hoops you have to jump through in order to apply to nursing school. They require these classes, because you need the knowledge of these classes coming in to nursing school in order to pass. If you are too busy to actually learn the content, even if you can pass all of the classes, you are still hurting yourself in the end. Nursing school is overwhelming, and when you don't have the foundational knowledge you need, it will make your life hell. Just my thoughts, good luck!
