Is this new grad a nut or what? Opinions please !

We have a new grad on our floor. We kept hearing that she was going to be so good. She graduated with a 4.0 and her parents are both physicians. Well, she is far from good.

She turns off her pager to chart. In the meantime her patients are asking for pain meds and she is ignoring them.

Third, she is sooo very slow. She has been on orientation for a month and this week they have started letting her take her own patients. She says she knows how to do everything but you check on her and she's got the PB plugged in under the pump. I can take alot, I've been a preceptor for years and with some real challenges who have turned out to be very good nurses but I don't know about her.

The thing that really blows my mind is the fact that she has picked up a British accent from one of the preceptors. She has been told her numerous times to cut it out and speak normally. I mean is she immature or what? Any opinions? Suggestions? Thanks!

I'm surprised the instructor would give out that type of information about a student's academic record. Whether or not her father had "pull" at the school, if it could be documented that she was absolutely unqualified to graduate then didn't the instructor have a responsibility to healthcare consumers not to allow her to pass? How cowardly. I certainly would have never admitted that I did something so gutless. Also I have to wonder if she was so horrible, how did she pass boards? .

Sharon - that was my first thought as well. Seems a little hinky to me.

As to talking to computers at work, I do it all the time with the computer that has Pharmtrak on it . . . it takes so darn long to do anything on this old DOS dinosaur that I talk, I yell, I cuss, I groan in disgust . . ..

She passed NCLEX because she is very book smart. She has no common sense, no people skills, lack of organization and lack of even simple critical thinking. Today I had trouble getting her to the phone when different depts called her with questions about her patients. Towards the end of the day she said "gee I don't think I'm cut out for Med/Surg". Well I think that's a big step for her.

I have to tell you something funny. Radiology came in to do a portable on her patient and she was standing in the room and the rad tech said to the patient "is there any chance that you're pregnant?" This new grad said " no of course not, how rude, why would you ask me something like that?" ! :rotfl: This is not funny because she said it, it's funny because it is funny! Iam not just poking fun at her. (I hear the replies coming already)

It seems like a "Let me bust on this new grad" thread. Every day brings another new post mocking her or questioning how she graduated. She must have learned something...she passed NCLEX. (Or did her father pay off the BON for that state, too?)

I'm starting to doubt much of this. If nothing else, it's very mean-spirited. I hope she doesn't visit this site...can you imagine reading about yourself on a public BB?

I do have one concern about the thread: is this being done in a way that others who are out in her actual real world workplace could read this and figure out it was her? OOOH that would be bad. How about if she tripped into it? That could be devastating.

The goal here should be to figure out how to get her help. I dont fault the original poster, she must be soooo frustrated! And we do need somewhere to sort things out, thus allnurses...

Yes, you are absolutely correct Dutchgirl! Some people seem to want to pick apart your words rather than read your post for what it is. Just keep us posted on what develops, I for one, am fascinated

I didn't say the school gave her the grades. She is smart, she did graduate with a 4.0, she did pass NCLEX. She did not get into nursing school on her "own" merit.

Why would the school in not keep her, she passed her classes with flying colors. She did better than the majority of us I'm sure. Passing with a 4.0 does not make you a good nurse. Some Wonderful compassionate nurses that I've worked with have passed by the skin of their teeth and taken NCLEX more than once.

My nurse manager is a very decent, honest, dedicated nurse who is too fair, IMO. We are a small rural hosp (45 beds) we have a rural jr college in town. I know people who teach there, so what? I'm sure everyone knows someone who teaches somewhere, I repeat so what? So hard to believe? The girl did pass everything on her own merit. Why would a nursing instructor kill her chances at a job without giving her the benefit of the doubt, just as my NM has given her every opportunity to prove herself. The girl herself has realized she's not cut out for M/S.

Thank you gr8rnpjt for reading my posts for what they are. As I've said all along the original post was in the "breakroom" I did not move it, although I understand why it was moved it was written to be a simple question (or so I thought) as to what you thought of a new grad using a British accent while being asked not to but continuing to do so anyway.

For those of you who want to question, why is it my business? (Patient Safety-could be your family member in that bed). Or how could your NM know her teacher? Did her Daddy pay someone, pay the BON? Well......just let your imaginations run wild !

Now this is important: Nursing can be so very stressful, when I need to vent or need opinions I come here. I have friends here and receive alot of good advice. I thank you friends very sincerely, you are wonderful, money can't buy that kind of therapy. I know who's opinion I can respect. THANK YOU TO ALL MY ALL NURSES FRIENDS !

I feel sorry for this strange girl. Yesterday they gave her 3 patients on her own. I saw her talking to the computers that were off "Come on tonto you know you can win this race", others saw her talking to the TV's in the patients rooms. I saw her biting her lower lip so bad that she had blood on her front teech. She would run down the hall for no reason and then get in a patients room and go "wow that's tiring". I think it's time for her to go. Just my opinion.

Names kept private to protect the innocent. I wouldn't be too concerned, she passed her formal write up around and it included line by line all the strange things she did. Now everyone knows all about it. I don't know if she'll be let go or not but I hope before she gets another job that she will go for counseling. In the beginning I was only somewhat amused and frustrated about the accent but as the time has passed I truely feel sorry for this girl and wish her no ill will.
