Is this new grad a nut or what? Opinions please !

Nurses General Nursing

Published

We have a new grad on our floor. We kept hearing that she was going to be so good. She graduated with a 4.0 and her parents are both physicians. Well, she is far from good.

She turns off her pager to chart. In the meantime her patients are asking for pain meds and she is ignoring them.

Third, she is sooo very slow. She has been on orientation for a month and this week they have started letting her take her own patients. She says she knows how to do everything but you check on her and she's got the PB plugged in under the pump. I can take alot, I've been a preceptor for years and with some real challenges who have turned out to be very good nurses but I don't know about her.

The thing that really blows my mind is the fact that she has picked up a British accent from one of the preceptors. She has been told her numerous times to cut it out and speak normally. I mean is she immature or what? Any opinions? Suggestions? Thanks!

Does this mean I should not go around quoting political, religous, and soical ideas from the Life of Brian, Holy Grail, and The Meaning of Life in a British accent when I become a nurse??? Darn........I was so looking forward to that.

I believe it is an essential skill! (odd its not on the NCLEX)

Here's some prep. Sorry, I don't actually know anything about nursing...

King Arthur: Old woman.

Dennis: Man.

King Arthur: Man, sorry. What knight lives in that castle over there?

Dennis: I'm 37.

King Arthur: What?

Dennis: I'm 37. I'm not old.

King Arthur: Well I can't just call you "man".

Dennis: Well you could say "Dennis".

King Arthur: I didn't know you were called Dennis.

Dennis: Well you didn't bother to find out did you?

If all else fails, you could get a job at the Ministry of Funny Walks, or you could be The bicycle repairman....

UPDATE !! Ok this has turned into an interesting thread. One simple post, such interest! This afternoon I heard that my NM was told that the only reason she had passed was because her father is a physician and has alot of pull at the school. I'll keep you updated.

This afternoon I also found out that my nurse manager called her school and asked how she passed nursing. She was told that the only reason she had passed was because her father is a physician and has alot of pull at the school. I was horrified. How awful to put patients at risk just to have your daughter pass.

I said that in an earlier post I made! That explains a lot. She's OTD (out the door). It's just a matter of time now. How very, very sad. Maybe her father can hire her to work in his office. :stone

I kind of feel sorry for her. It wasn't fair to her for the school to pass her just because her father has "pull." (Assuming that this is actually true, and not just grist for the rumor mill.)

Sad, very sad. Like you said maybe she could (should) work in her father's office.

I've been reading the thread with interest -- thanks to the OP for the update.

A sad case ... some psychiatric disorders sometimes fully manifest themselves when a person is in his/her early 20s. The stress of being a new nurse seems to have taken a great toll on her well-being. I hope she finds help, whether through the hospital EAP or privately, and then continues on down some productive path whether it's nursing or another field.

When I was training (more years ago now than I would care to admit) there was a nurse who was the niece of the DON. She was notorious - it was she who collected all the false teeth in the ward put them on one tray and then scrubbed them and then................you guessed it - took a dentist 6 months to sort it out!!

The best stroy by far though about her was when she was told to give a patient 2 suppositories and an ear syringe. She came back to tell the RN that the suppositories kept falling out - Yep! She had inserted them in the ears!

Some people are NOT suited to nursing and the best thing is to acknowledge that and get them into a different stream of work before they waste thier life and those of others.

Sorry Hodge, I am not yet ready to give up on this Monty Python thingey, it is rich with educational opportunity. For instance, your british accent will be very helpful when you are taking basic life support, and the like.

case in point:

The Dead Parrot Senario

You have just returned from the pet store where you have purchased a parrot. You leave the parrot cage momentarily on the coffee (tea?)table while you go to the kitchen to make a pot of tea (very british of you). Moments later, when you return to the living room, you notice that your parrot is lying on his side at the bottom of the cage. He is cold* and unresponsive, despite your efforts to awaken him. Before you return to the pet store and request a refund, what course of action would you take?

*Hint: role out hypothermia, parrots are cold blooded.

Hint: definitly use a barrier device while giving breaths: I heard there is some kind of bird flu going around, and with your luck it will mutate and become pandemic...

I'm surprised the instructor would give out that type of information about a student's academic record. Whether or not her father had "pull" at the school, if it could be documented that she was absolutely unqualified to graduate then didn't the instructor have a responsibility to healthcare consumers not to allow her to pass? How cowardly. I certainly would have never admitted that I did something so gutless. Also I have to wonder if she was so horrible, how did she pass boards? This child does sound as if she has some psychiatric problems and I agree with the person who said that some people are not meant to be in this profession. She is definitely in the wrong environment at this time.
