The nurses fired for mocking patients on TikTok exemplify our culture of narcissism
Is it mocking patients to complain to each other about patient activities - things like laying on the call light? Granted, it was poor judgement to put it out on public media. But, really?
This makes me glad that AllNurses is anonymous.

Mocking is fine when done in private and leaving no trace.
Employers are very protective of their image and reputation. These nurses worked for a hospital with a very strict social media policy. Hopefully they were told this during orientation.
The hospital knows that people get outraged by videos like this. They understand that the patients are the ones in a vulnerable position, and having nurses mock them publicly is as they say in comedy, "punching down".

Of course it's mocking. How could anyone think otherwise?

Stay off of social media about anything work related. Don't post after drinking alcoholic beverages.

Mocking at all should be kept to yourself. If you find yourself mocking, time to get another job. Patients deserve nurses of high character.
I read the article but didn't see the TicToc video. The article sounded over the top ("egotistical monsters", "public indecency of the narcissistic monsters") but that didn't match the examples used: “When we’ve already told you to push your call light but every 5 minutes your family member coming up to the front desk asking for something else,” said one nurse mockingly. “It’s the unlimited trips to the nursing station for me,” said another bemoaning nurse.
I don't like to watch videos, and I supposed that I had the whole picture from the article.
Sorry.

I freely admit I have had my moments where I have ranted about the 'pork chop' in bed 10 who tried to punch me.
That said its been in the nurses station well away from anyone who may not understand that sometimes nurses need to rant, its what allows us to step back on the floor and treat our patients with the dignity and respect they deserve/ or not accidentally pour a jug of ice water over the head of those pork chop patients who need to go fly a kite?
Those nurses were beyond stupid. Cant believe that they actually thought it was a good idea

Come on now...they didn't complain to each other... they put their complaints on social media to create celebrity for themselves. Why would any pregnant woman want to see any one of those faces at their bedside during labor? This was very targeted advertising for Emory that Emory didn't ask for... apparently completed while on the clock.
Why is any health professional surprised that they were fired?

As I said above, I hadn't seen the video, I only read the article. Had I seen the video, I would have understood.

There are two types of people who work direct patient care-
1. Those who at least occasionally succumb to the dark humor we use to deal with the things we experience
2. Those who use that same dark humor for the same reasons and then lie about it to demean their colleagues and/or make themselves feel better about themselves.
Putting it on social media is never OK.
