I had a friend tell me that her interview was cancelled, as were others. So they are notgoing to have a GN program, period??? What about those that already had an interview?

I know that all my classmates and I who had an interview at the Memorial City location had their interviews cancelled. I don't know about the other locations, though.

I had an interview a couple weeks ago at Memorial Hermann TMC for the GN Internship in the NICU and was offered the position. I have a few classmates who were also hired for the internship in other units. Hope this helps!

I was told that they were no longer hiring GN or new R.N.'s if they did not come through the Internship. I was really livid about this b/c I don't feel it's fair. They only have like 20 Intern positions and 300 applicants. How are we suppose to get a job if none of the hospitals will hire new nurses. Ben Taub told me the same thing b/c they are trying something new. :angryfire

I was called in for an interview at LBJ...A classmate of mine was also called in for an interview which would have been at both Ben Taub and LBJ...I was hired on at Texas Children's yesterday in their ER department. I was really shocked I was even called in for an interview...Keep trying, something will come up!

Just make sure you are going through an internship of some kind. You cannot work in ICU or L&D without an extensive internship.

I have a question! What can you do if you applied to every internship program (Memorial herman, Ben taub/LJB, St Lukes and Methodist) and dont get hired?

I have graduated Dec of 07, yes 07 and moved in March to Houston from Chicago and was too late to get into the summer internship. Then applied in November and still did not get in any, not even called for an interview.

Such a waste of time and loads of frustration.

If anyone has any advice please help!

You try to get hired somewhere that will let you work med/surg and after doing that for six months to a year you try to train internally to an area of your preference.

I work for one of the big TMC guys' suburban locations and we have a complete hiring freeze due to economic reasons (supposedly).

I graduate in May and they were planning on an internship here but the way things are going I'm quite concerned, myself.

Did the same thing. Graduated, moved to Houston, couldnt find a job.

However, began doing private duty nursing after not being able to find a hospital job. They oriented me completely and I became very competent with trachs, vents, gb's, and chronic care children. (RN's could be new grads to work Private Duty, LPNS had to have 1 year experience)

If you cant get a hospital job, start applying elsewhere. Nursing homes, assisted living, private duty, ANYWHERE to get experience.

After 9 months of Private Duty, I transferred to a hospital setting, and then eventually to the med center 1 year after that. Loving it ever since!

Good luck! Also, be persistent. Hospitals get hundreds of applications, but only so many phone calls and follow ups. Also, send resumes to the managers, not just to HR. HR gets so many, but if the manager likes your resume, you may get a call and get a job. And, as a new grad, apply everywhere - doesnt matter if its your dream job or not - you need to get the experience.

i know it sucks, but there are only so many nurses to orient new grads. no hospital can take 300 new grads at once, they'd sink. each unit can only handle 2-4 new grads at a time so that new grads can get the best orientation possible.

just keep applying, and call for follow up. also, make sure you apply to everywhere and every unit, not just the one you want. you'll be able to transfer to a dept, of your choice after a year. good luck!
