Hi, I am thinking to be a LPN as a second career. I'm on the wait list at the near by community college. It has 2year wait list. There is also a private LPN school at 23K. I don't want to wait that long.. but also afraid to spend more than 20K for the program.
Is there many job opportunutis as a LPN and private school is worth of money?
Please give me an advice. Thank you!

Yes there are many job opportunities as an LPN. But, no it is not worth that much. I paid less than 15,000 for my RN education. Shop around if i were you. Consider a community ADN-RN program I'm sure it is a lot less cheaper than the LPN program you are speaking of.

Employability for LPNs varies by area. Better in large metropolitan areas. In general, since you have to be on a long wait list anyway, it is better to wait 2 yrs for an RN program. Many people apply to both types of programs in their area and complete whichever program they can enter first. They also use the LPN license as another avenue to get into an RN program via the LPN to RN bridge program. The LPN license would give them an advantage. As far as the 23K, if you have that kind of money, then it can be worth "buying" (as a phrase) off some of that waiting time. A lot of your decision will depend on how many, what kind, and the accessibility of the nrsg programs in your area. Good luck on your decision and your wait.

It wouldn't be to me. Are you guaranteed a spot at the CC in two years? If so, I'd use the time in between to do gen ed requirements and pre-reqs for your RN degree. FWIW, my LPN at a CC cost less than $7k. Best of luck to you. Jules

My RN cost about 2k. I'd wait it out. How long will it take you to pay off a 23K loan?

I am one of those people who paid nearly $20,000 to attend a private LVN program to avoid waiting lists, prerequisites, and the red tape offered by typical community college nursing programs. If you can find a cheaper avenue of attending school, I would suggest you do that first. However, the expensive option has worked out for me thus far. 2006 was my first year working as an LVN and I earned over $47,000; therefore, I already earned my $20,000 tuition back. :)

yu would be able to pay off that amount BU
i agree with others when they say to prepare yourself for an rn spot is at all possible...lpn at a cc should be a fraction of that amount
also a thing to consider is that a private school can have unqualified instructers and may not qualify you to sit for nclex..be very careful about where you put your time and money

Thank you so much for the replies.
The thing is I can not wait that long.
I have 2 kids and my mother will come to US from other country to take care my kids. I don't know what will happen 2 years later. What if she is not in the situation to come to US.
In addition I need to make money ASAP.
I was thinking to be a nurse for 5 years.. and regret i didn't start early.

My course at my local community college will be about $8000 total. The private college here would be at least double that. I wouldn't do it, personally. I'll wait until I get in to the community college. They dont' have a waiting list. You apply for Sept intake, if you dont' get it, you're considered first for the January intake. If you don't get into that, you're back at square 1 to apply for the next September along with everyone else who applies.

If you are not going to make a substansive amount of money while waiting (2 years..) then you might as well start now and become LPN for 23K....
Let's say your first LPN job you make 40K year. Then It is not impossible to pay off 23K plus interest (say 27K) in 2-3 years. Did you hear about the loan repayment programs if you're a nurse or medtech? Don't forget the money lost + time invested learning and working in the nursing field for 2 years of waiting.
my 2 cents....
God Bless
