Is it too late to become a nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

I have a questions and a concern. I am 26- soon to be 27- and I have decided to go back to my studies to become a nurse. I just had my first child 3 weeks ago and it really made me take a second look at where I'm at and what I'm doing. When I was 22, I began to study to become an EMT. However, I took up a simple job in the mortgage industry while I studied and it eventually sucked me in. I left my studies and stayed in the mortgage business, but I am SICK of it. I regret what I did. Now I wonder? With a total of four years (2 for my pre-reqs & 2 for the nursing courses) am I too old to have a change in mind? By the time I finish I'll be 31. Most poeple jump into this at their early 20's. Will I still have a chance to make this my final choice? Your feedback and encouraging words are welcome.

Thanks

Alex

It's not really a matter of age, but of how sure your are this is REALLY what you want to do, since it will take a major commitment of time, energy, brainpower, money, time away from other interests, etc.

Alexbor,

You are not too young to get into nursing! The average age in my class was 30! If this is what you really want, then I wish you the best of luck!

HI Alex,

I'm kind of glad that you brought up your concern. I'm 26 years old too and am just getting started and I too, kind of feel like I'm getting a late start..knowing I could have already been done by now if I had not decided to get married at 22 years old. But it's no use beating yourself up for the past.....you can't go back and change it...you can only move forward and change your future. Now, I am so totally focused and am getting excellent grades because I have a burning desire to be nurse. I wanted to then..but I have the burn for it now...so I think everything happens for a reason..and like the other person said....you'll be 31 in a few years anyways....with or without a nursing degree..and it might as well be WITH a nursing degree!!!

If you go to the introduction thread, you will see that many of us are career changers in our 40s and older.

You''re never too old, I was in school when my son was in college, okay?? Be 47 in march, working on my rn degree. Things have a way of strangely working out for the best. I graduated from nursing school same week my husband of 24 years was laid off his job. We wouldnt have our home if it wasn't for my income. Go for it and best of luck. You'll be glad you did//

ummmm You are asking this in your 20's??????????????????????

heck your life is not even 1/4 over.

what ever will you do when you are OLD....say 40? (gasp)

no it's never too late----several women I graduated RN school with were well into their 50s and grandmothers. You are as old as you feel, really. Maybe you need to revise your perspective a bit. Good luck.

I'm sure by now, you can see that the answer would be...no, you're not too old!

I'm 33 & just starting...

I was 40 when I entered RN school, and 43 when I graduated! Course, my boyfriend actually beat me, he was 42 and 44 respectively. Are you too old????!!!!!???? If you are then I am dead! I think the average age of people entering nursing is something like 30s or maybe even 40s so that said, you are no where near too old. Anyway, how old will you be if you don't go back to school? Same age, but no accomplishment! Go for it!!!!!! The hardest part for you is going to be balancing family and school. Get a good look at you family cause for the next two or three years you won't see them much!!!! Good luck!

I was 50 when I graduated with a BSN. I've been a nurse for a year now, and I'm doing alright (except for my poor feet). Go back to school now for your nursing degree. Take it from me: that nagging little voice telling you to do it does not fade with time.
