Is your house a mess?

I swear I feel like I live in utter filth, between a 4 yr old and a 1 yr old and a husband the house is worse than when Im in school! It must be the Christmas leftovers everywhere and new toys. Is anyone able to keep their house clean and orderly with kids running around? if so what is your secret?

Personally I hate laundry (I dont fold) I just dont care- if there is a pile of clean clothes thats good enough for me.

And dont get me started on dishes.....

It must be a mental thing, some people just cant stand a mess- it eats them up inside. I WISH I was like that. I'll sit there and study my but off, but laundry....dont care so much. LOL

My husband has been off of work this whole week for the holidays...and now he knows why I wait until he gets home to clean or tidy up. He would always say " Just pick up it only takes 15 mintues and then you'll be done." Well, I literally took the day off the day after Christmas and let him run the household. I didn't change their diapers, no feedings, I didn't make lunch, do laundry, dinner, dishes - I did nothing - It was wonderful. Guess who had a change of tune..=] He now sees why I wait until he gets home because my kids don't give me a break. When they take their naps during the day..I don't want to clean up, I want to read the paper or take a shower.

My house seems impossible. Both my husband and mother-in-law are "collectors" and I have alot of books. I think MIL is the biggest offender though, her stuff is freakin everywhere, and she doesn't pick up after herself, not only that, she tends to get upset because I am pretty vicious about throwing out all her collections. (Walmart bags, empty mason jars, newspapers, and magazines are her worst collections.)

It's very difficult because if I vent, my husband gets so mad he says it's time for her to move out. (she didn't raise him and she has always lived in a huge mess, never cleaned her house or threw out garbage... i could go on but no one would believe it.) I don't want to get my husband mad at his mother, so I try and suffer in silence and just keep on her about picking up, or I pick it all up myself.... sigh.

Add 4 kids, and 4 cats. hahahaaaaa:lol_hitti

My dh is a pack rat. I cannot stand clutter and he can. When I moved to the new apartment, I made him rent a garage and guess where all the clutter went :D

At least we were able to compromise for my sanity :rotfl:

i had to laugh at myself when i saw this thread... i was just thinking how much i needed to get my act together when it came to keeping my place clean! oh well...

i would classify my house as messy, not dirty. my hubby and i are not so bothered by mess as we should be, though i will say that he is neater than i am. i can't vouch for the dishes in the sink that have yet to be washed from dinner 24 hours ago - i'm sure those are starting to breed something microscopic - but the rest of our house is just in disarray, not decomposition. if you walk into our bedroom, you won't find any food, but you will find clothes, clean and dirty, on the floor. we have half-opened mail that sits on the bottom two steps of our stairway in the foyer, and probably a healthy coating of dust on most major appliances. no bugs, though. no dirty plates anywhere but the kitchen sink.

i have to share: a couple of weeks ago, i practically screamed when i opened the cupboard to get some flour out for a recipe and there were all these moth-like bug things in there. ewwwww! i thought it was tightly closed, but i must have been wrong. anyway, i had to clean out all the cupboards, use a bleach cleaning solution so strong that my eyes watered for about an hour afterward, and throw out a bunch of suspect food. only the flour had the bugs, but i didn't want to take any chances. ew, ew, ew. i still get the heebie-jeebies thinking about it. :uhoh21:

occasionally i'll see a news story where someone's house/apartment is in such horrible condition, police had to wear masks just to get inside. worse yet is when these people try to keep kids in this filth - they get whisked away to dcf, usually, but it's so sad. maggots, feces, pestilence of all kinds... so sad.

Key things in housekeeping.

1) as long as messy doesn't equal filthy

2) as long as your relaxation time isn't spend cleaning

3) keep clutter off the floor (fire hazard)

4) no overflowing trash

5) and so what if you have a pile of laundry that needs folded? it got washed and dried, it's clean.

My house is small, and neither my son or my husband are good about keeping the place tidy, so yes, it is usually a mess (by my standards, anyway). It is rarely filthy, however. I'm pretty vigilant about keeping it clean, particularly the kitchen and bathrooms. We're probably going to start having a service come in once a week, too.

those bugs might already have been in the flourbag when you bought it, i bought a ricemix before and it had bugs in it yuck:barf01:

i also found a fossilized hotdog in my son's toybox before :D

our problem here is definitely pethair......it clings to everything everywhere.

This is funny i have spent my break from school giving my house a thorough cleaning it was driving me crazy but cant seem to accomplish more than the basics during school. I have raised all of my children and have grandchildren but my husband and i joke because they are always at our house, keeps them from having to clean their own, lol. I am just happy they come home! I am enjoying having a clean house for the next couple of week.

one time, the newspaper did a story about people whose job it is to clean the homes of people who have died intestate and/or with no next of kin. the article featured homes that required dumpsters and hazmat teams. it was really kind of sad to think that there are people who live like that. dementia or mental illness are always involved. in our old house, there was a neighbor who kept her christmas tree up all year and had her living room piled with clutter. she'd open her door wide for trick or treaters, so she obviously saw nothing amiss. i know she was renting that place, though, and always wondered if the owner had any idea how it was being kept. you've got to wonder about vermin in a place like that.

Our house is deceptively clean, husband and I and our renter are really good about "relocating" clutter. My very traditional, neat-as-a-pin parents came to visit from MA for christmas. My mom opened a walk-in closet and just about fainted. The look on her face was priceless. She now thinks that moving to the NW made me messy - probably not the case ;).

That "How Clean Is Your House" show makes me feel SO much better. And I have always been in EMS and now do home hospice care, so I KNOW it's not that bad...but it ain't GOOD either.

My good buddy is a scrub tech with OCD, and she thinks RN's are the dirtiest people!!! We had a really humid summer here, and lots of mold and mildew. Her boss (an RN) mentioned spilling something on her carpet, and was amazed when, two weeks later, MUSHROOMS were growing on the stain. :uhoh21: :uhoh21: :uhoh21: :uhoh21: :uhoh21:
