Is your house a mess?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I swear I feel like I live in utter filth, between a 4 yr old and a 1 yr old and a husband the house is worse than when Im in school! It must be the Christmas leftovers everywhere and new toys. Is anyone able to keep their house clean and orderly with kids running around? if so what is your secret?

Personally I hate laundry (I dont fold) I just dont care- if there is a pile of clean clothes thats good enough for me.

And dont get me started on dishes.....

It must be a mental thing, some people just cant stand a mess- it eats them up inside. I WISH I was like that. I'll sit there and study my but off, but laundry....dont care so much. LOL

My house is messy enough to be happy and clean enough to be healthy. I keep the dishes done. The laundry, eh, not really. We pick up and vaccum about once a week. My dh is a pack rat and when he goes OOT on business I throw alot of his crap away and he never misses it. I hired a maid to come once a week for $65. I thought wow this is going to be the best thing since sliced bread. It really wasn't. I let her go after 4 weeks. My motto is people come to see me not my house. If they are bothered by it then don't come over. I would love to have a squeaky clean house. I myself am very organized but with my dh and 16 y/o son it's near impossible.

Key things in housekeeping.

1) as long as messy doesn't equal filthy

2) as long as your relaxation time isn't spend cleaning

3) keep clutter off the floor (fire hazard)

4) no overflowing trash

5) if its washed and clean it's ok, doesn't have to be put away

Hey! This is it in a nutshell. My other iggy's, grandsons photo and various others are also in a avitar folder, keeping Klinger company no doubt!

Her basic tenets include:

getting dressed including your face and shoes every morning (you can't be motivated in your housecoat and bunny slippers)

shine your sink every night (so you wake up to at least one clean and uncluttered thing every morning - from this all other clean and uncluttered things will flow)

CLUTTER CANNOT BE ORGANIZED - it can only be gotten rid of.

I went from a person who is a scattered neatnik by nature, but who would let my home get into disarray and have piles of laundry and dishes ('soaking for later'), to living without fear of having my doorbell ring. I can talk with a friend on the phone and invite her to come over spontaneously right now and my home is ready to receive and entertain a guest. Dinner is planned (most of the time ;) - this is alway a work in process and my greatest challenge.) I'm never standing over the dryer waiting for underwear with five minutes until I have to go to work. Getting the little things under control frees you up to focus your energy on the really important things in life. You can't fly if you're tethered to the ground by feelings of inadequacy because your home feels unmanageable. It should be a safe haven.

I can't emphasize how good she has been for my peace of mind. I so wish I had had this while I was in nursing school - my life would have been so much more well-managed, and I wouldn't have felt that all else was subordinated to work and school in those last two years.

you need to FLY....has anyon eheard about Fly Lady? it's a get organized house/life system. check out the website.

i'm a flybaby. one week.

her system really helps you to not get overwhelemed and realize it did not become a mess in one day so it aint getting cleaned in one day!

good luck.

I swear, my house has been out of control forever. Everytime I even started the 15 minutes FlyLady thing I'd get overwhelmed! In August, I got a home equity loan. I planned all these neat things I wanted to do, including an office so I could get the computer and desk out of the dining room. It all hinged on switching my son's room into a room that was full of stuff.

So, I went online and found an organizer. I knew if there was someone there to do it w/me, I wouldn't get overwhelmed. She was expensive, but soooo worth every penny. She helped me get rid of easily 1/2 the stuff in my house--paper trash, things that I didn't use, need or want any more. I had rented a dumpster (we used 2 eventually), we trashed, recycled, donated--and each day she packed up her big boat of a car w/my recycling and give aways so once it was out of the house, I didn't have to do anything more to it.

Meanwhile, the construction ("Double D Construction", 2 women) worked on the other stuff--new fencing, a whole house fan, 2 ceiling fans, a whole lot of painting (my 'gothic' son's choices: black and blood red ); new carpeting; the closet folks did 2 closets. I got him moved, then the closet co. came back and put in the office.

Anyway---I got off track. It is so much easier to keep the place clean and to find things. I do have a housekeeper q o wk--also worth every penny! I've had her for over a year (before remodel), bless her, she just cleaned around the stuff, but at least I knew that under all the mess, the house was clean--esp kitchen and bathrooms.

I do think flylady is a good thing, but she sure can get preachy @ times. And I'm addicted to the huge "More Time Moms" calendar.

Good luck everyone!

I am lovin' this thread! :D Mushrooms growing up from the carpet!??? LOL!

Okay, my house it is cluttered and it is messy!!!!!!!!!! It drives me craziness

Dishes are clean and laundry is clean, husband and kid are fed. This is all I can do. Actually right now the house is relatively clean b/c of school break. However, most of the time, the floors are dirty (live on farm - always something gettin' tracked in - despite no shoes allowed), counters are dirty, clothes are piled up on couch, daughter's work table (this is a full-sized dining room table in a separete room we never use - we eat @ kitchen table) is piled high w/ her school work, our bills are usually piled up on counter.

This is what really pisses me off: my husband (retired) and daughter (10 y/o) do zilch housework. I on the other hand, work, go to school, commute 2 hours QD and do all the housework. When I complain about this DH says, "well do you want to do the outside chores?" (which I do do when he and DD are off on one of their trips that I can't go on b/c of above mentioned duties). I always respond, "do you want to go work as a nurse and do you want to do my school work for me?"

Does anybody else have this problem? Have you ever been able to overcome it? And if so, how?????

BTW, I've tried just letting it go but it doesn't seem to bother others in the house to the point of motivation...
