Is it too hard to take Microbiology, AP II, and Chemistry together?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Next semester is my last semester before I apply for nursing school and I have all three of these sciences to finish. I was a Social Work major before so I am behind on sciences. I think I can do it, but was wondering if anyone else has and how hard it was?

No, I would most definitely NOT do this. You stated that you were behind in Sciences so that is a red flag right there. I have taken all 3 of these classes (not together) but they are some tough cookies. Full dedication is required for each class. If I were you, I would take Chemistry first (as it is a foundation that can aid in the completion of the rest of your courses). Best wishes with whatever you decide.

I definitely think it'll be way too hard!!! Also, if acceptance into the nursing program of your choice is very competitive, you will need high grades in those courses. That may be very difficult to do when taking all three at the same time. And of course there are other variables to consider, i.e., kids, job, study time, etc.

Oh goodness no, don't. At the most, take two at a time, but that's if you're really eager. Most people I know who took two per semester dropped one anyway, and that's just extra frustration and lost money.

I took an extra semester to get all my pre-reqs done, but did well in them, and I got into the clinical program on the first try.

It's totally doable. Inorganic chem is easy.

I would definitely NOT take (3) sciences together!! Chemistry should be completed before Microbiology, because chemistry is entangled in Micro and you would need to know the basics. You also didn't tell us your circumstances...married, kids, job?? So, ultimately it would depend on how much time you have to devote to your science classes. Grades are very important, especially in the sciences because it not only counts toward getting into nursing school, but your future employers will look at your transcripts/GPA. Your grades will follow you, so you need to do what you feel is best to keep your grades up!!

Good luck! :)

What is your personal life schedule like? Do you work full time, have kids or other obligations?

Do you know who the teachers are and how they test and what their expectations are?

I think that taking all three class are totally possible, even able to get a great grade as you can use a bit of each class in the other. A&P II will focus a great deal on the body chemistry, micro will focus on a cells chemistry and well chemistry just is....

Good luck in all your classes!!!

I did not take all three at the same time. I took Micro and AP II together which was actually a good thing since some topics overlapped. Chem is another thing completely independent of the other two.

You said that you will be applying for Nursing next sem. When does the actual Nursing courses start? If it does not begin until the Fall of 2011 can't you take Chem in the spring or the summer?

I am not sure if your program does this but my college allowed us to take Chem in the summer prior to the first day of nursing school. It was fine for them as long as I passed Chem with at least a C+

Depending on the school and the teacher micro and AP2 can be crazy difficult. If I were you I would do AP2 and chem together and then try to take micro in the summer. If you really wanna finish them all in one semester I'd see if I could take chem online. To me online classes are a little easier and you can do them on your own time so it wouldn't interfere AS MUCH with micro and AP2. Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK!!!

p.s. If you didnt get an A in AP1 I wouldn't attempt doing all these in the same semester.

um.. the answer is yes.

unless you have SUPERB recall and time management skills and can remember what you learned in what class i wouldnt take em all at the same time.

If it were me, I would do it, but I wouldn't recommend it to others unless they had a strong commitment to it and were willing to have no life outside of school for that semester. I agree that you would need excellent time management skills to get this done since you would be spending many extra hours in class for the labs required for these courses. Bottom line is that it's doable, but not many would be able to do it well.

that is too much. You are spreading yourself too thin. Take them seperately or two at a time then 1 later.

I think that since I did it with 4 kids and married with a husband who travels, you can but I will not lie, it was horribly hard. It was alot of time away from my family with studying with other peers and also on my own. I also stressed out over the kids homework projects and the house. If you are ok of letting go, I think that it is duable. I think it depends on the kind of student you have been so far. I know what you are saying about trying to get it all done in one shot but consider this, your grades for these classes count BIG TIME~ You have to know that if you get a lower grade even a B it can work against you. It did me and not after taking the NAT today, it was equally hard to see my work feel like I should have tried to get some A's and not B's on anything. I hope you find the answer you are looking for.
