I am studying transcultural nursing and am focusing on health care needs of gays/lesbians/bisexuals/transgender patients, and a question has come up that I would like more nursing opinions/info about. Does anyone know of a gay/lesbian nurses association? Should there be one? There is a Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.
Thanks, any input will be appreciated.
Seems like in my hospital as I am a white female, I am the minority. So how would you feel if I started up the "Honkey Nurses association?" I use to always think it was extremely idiotic when I was in college the black associations, hispanic, the gay and lesbian associations- but god forbid I have a honky girl association, then "I" would be a racist.
You are allowed to celebrate who you are as long as you are not white and straight. How about the "we're not gay association"- do you think that would alienate the gay people?
How about us nurses just stick together? Otherwise I think my Honky Nurses association perhaps may have a chance.

oh come on booboo.....these groups that you refer to are the minorities...we, the WASPS, are the majority. now i won't even get into reverse discrimination issues here, but i really don't see where whites are alienated. and thank God, there is no longer a real need for black associations as we have dozens of agencies to govern any disciminatory acts. but homosexuality? it still is far from accepted. and i've stated, i don't see a need for a nurses association for gays/lesbians...but do understand the gen'l need or desire for one.

So White and straight people are not allowed to be proud of who they are? That's odd because a whole lot of people didn't get that memo.
Honky? I haven't heard anyone use that word since George Jefferson......
:rotfl: Well-THAT just takes the cake.......All I can say is at least the poster has the courage to speak her beliefs even if they are based on ignorance.Sexual preference is a choice just about like your God-given hair color is,hon.....You can lie and lie and cover it up all you want to but genetics won't lie....It's not a choice-it's what you ARE....
Well said. I've always liked you!

Honey, you'd better pick a gay man to pick a new title for that group. Honky Nurses Association doesn't work for me, needs a little more pizzaz, something to draw the people in. That is so 1970s sounding. Very tacky actually.
As I've been reading this thread, it occurs to me that a lot of the resistence to these various "associations" is that those of us not eligible dislike being excluded. I can't join the Slavic Sisters of Sappho so nobody should. But, the thing is{ALERT: Liberal white angst approaching!} what if the group you feel excluded from is Mainstream Society?
Frankly, I don't see any problem if Gay/Lesbian nurses want to form an association to support each other and/or lobby for their interests. Nor do I see a problem if Christian (or Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, or Wiccan) nurses want to have their own interest group(s). Whether such groups are divisive would depend a lot on their agendas.
I don't see how encouraging open-mindedness, tolerance, and sensitivity could be divisive. I don't begin to claim I know anything like a representative sample of the Gay and Lesbian community, but I can't recall ever having heard anyone say I should become gay, or even that it's better to be gay, or that God or anyone else should punish us for not being gay.
I sometimes hear people say they shouldn't have to approve of gays, as long as they don't discriminate against them. That's fine, I suppose, but to me it's more a case that I have no right to approve or disapprove--it's just none of my business. Nor does it become my business merely because someone is openly gay, or even flamboyantly gay.
Now, it does seem a little unfair that some of us aren't allowed to be proud of our WASP heritage, but there's an easy solution to that: Say it now and say it loud, we're WASP and we're proud! Just, you know, don't burn a cross on somebody's lawn while you're saying it.

There you go, you've got the spirit!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you are that worried about who someone else is having sex with, you aren't having enough of it yourself. I see no other reason to be so obsessed with someone else's relationships.
POST OF THE DAY! now we need to make this into a bumper sticker! :rotfl:
