Is there/should there be a gay/lesbian nurses association?

Published

I am studying transcultural nursing and am focusing on health care needs of gays/lesbians/bisexuals/transgender patients, and a question has come up that I would like more nursing opinions/info about. Does anyone know of a gay/lesbian nurses association? Should there be one? There is a Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.

Thanks, any input will be appreciated.

"we nurses of all nations, sincerely believing that the best good of our profession will be advanced by greater unity of thought, sympathy and purpose, do hereby band ourselves in a confederation of workers to further the efficient care of the sick, and to secure the honor and the interests of the nursing profession."

preamble to the icn constitution, 1900

a summary of selected benchmarks in the history of the american nurses association.

listing of ana affiliated organizations.

all of these groups were created because nurses saw a need to discuss information about a subject that interested them and by coming together in an organized fashion could promote and expand on their interests.

another group that developed recently is ania - the american nursing informatics association

those that have the passsion and drive for organizing and sustaining a new association are to be admired.

You can joke all day about making up new names for associations that mean nothing. Just think about who you are offending. I just finished school and have not started my job yet. It scares me to think that the work place could be filled with such ignorance about social issues like these. I previoulsy worked in another service industry for 15 years and never faced the type of attitude that is comming accross in some of these posts. What scares me even more is that I may have to be closited at work. And that is really crummy. I've been out for 7 years now and never looked back at the closet until now. Isn't nursing suposed to be non-judgemental based on cultrual backgrounds. Guess what being gay/lesbian/bi/trans is part of a different culture. Lets be a bit more understanding here. Go back and check out what "rocknurse" has posted. Those are the points that he has made are what is on the forefront of medical issues in our sub-culture. I would hate to think what I would have to do if I was denied the ability to know what was hapening to my partener if he was sick.

These groups are not designed to seperate but to bring together a goup of people that may feel alienated in a place where we are suposed to feel comfortable. Please folks just youse your minds constructively and not hate.
