I am studying transcultural nursing and am focusing on health care needs of gays/lesbians/bisexuals/transgender patients, and a question has come up that I would like more nursing opinions/info about. Does anyone know of a gay/lesbian nurses association? Should there be one? There is a Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.
Thanks, any input will be appreciated.

1) I have not heard of any such organization, although I do believe that there is an online discussion board for GLBT healthcare workers.
2) I'm not sure that it would be such a great idea, anyway. There are enough problems with Male vs. Female nurses and Male vs Femal MDs etc. - why push yet another self-imposed division amongst nurses?
I do understand where the patient needs could easily be different across cultural lines (Gay, Lesbian, African American, Latino, Lithuanian, you-name-it, etc), but don't really know if there should be such an division amongst the health care providers themselves.

Why would nurses want to start an organization that is discriminatory? A nurse who abides by the code of ethics- treats everyone equal.

There are many reasons why nurses want to start an organization. Here are some examples.

I think though I agree with John. We need to be aware of perhaps the health issues and relationship dynamics in gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered patient, but no need to splinter ourselves off from the rest of nurses, when we need to be coming together for the common good. :)

Gay Nurses association? Why not? They have a "gay" everything these days.
Besides, they need to think of something new other than Six Flags and Disney days to get heterosexual America stirred up again.

Agreed. And in response to the why not since there is gay everything else. Well, there are Christian groups all over the place too that some people may find offensive, so really why not?
Frankly, I'm sick of so many people in this country making a big deal about all these "groups". If you don't like them, ignore them. You let yourself get all fired up about it. Now, the hate groups on the other hand, are a different story altogether..........

Should there be one? Well I guess that would be up to gay and lesbian nurses. If they did decide to form an association, I see nothing wrong with that and I can't fathom why someone would have a problem with it.

And this association would be something like the heterosexual nurses association, right?
Tell me, why do gay folk need to set themselves apart from the rest of us? Are gay folk special?

I think that if they want to start an organization, that would be fine. I don't see it being a matter of "should" or "should not". It isn't as though members of other nursing organizations discriminate against patients of other demographic groups. There is no reason to assume glb nurses do or would, either.

My take on the situation:
1. This is this person's first post on the board. I wouldn't make my 1st post so controversial, so I'd hazard a guess and say this person is a troll. Sorry if I'm wrong, but I just have this feeling.
2. Why divide us any further? How's the old saying go? Together we stand, divided we fall.
