I lived in the North for 23 yrs and in the South for the last 19 yrs. From my personal experience, there was a lot more prejudice up North. It may have just been the area where I grew up (inner city Baltimore, which is predominantly Black), but there was a LOT of racial tension BOTH ways. My political views have not changed btw- I voted Republican since I was old enough to vote (even coming from a democratic family). I'm not against socialized healthcare per se, but I don't believe American government is capable of running the show without breaking the bank. They have showed little expertise in running any kind of social program to date. I would love to see everyone have easy access to free or low cost medicine, I just don't think it's going to be the wonderful blessing so many democrats think it will. I know several people whose health insurance premiums have doubled since this shebang started, including my own.

I don't really consider Maryland "north" ;) LOL

There is racism and intolerance everywhere, on both sides of the fence unfortunately. I grew up in Alabama and moved to Indiana 3 years ago. I would say that racism is worse up here than in Alabama, at least worse than the area where I lived! I always tell people that the big difference is that in the South, people will make it absolutely clear that they don't care for you, while up north (at least in hoosier land anyway) they will be nice to you and pretend to be friendly so that people won't think they are racist. There is definitely a north-south divide in this country. I love the south and wish I could move back!! Not a big fan of the attitudes and entitlement issues that seem to rule this state. (I guess that makes me intolerant too!) :)

People in South Carolina do the same thing- no one wants to be labeled as being racist, yet their words and actions tell a different story. Honestly, our country still has a serious issue with racism

Okay, I'm really trying not to get thoroughly peeved at this. I'm from Georgia, born and raised, and I don't in any way consider myself racist. I have seen some narrow-minded judgement, especially in older generations, but personally don't condone it. Being from the South doesn't make you a racist or a bigot; individuals do that for themselves.

I live in vt. Almost as north as you can get. There's not a lot of diversity here and some of the older generations are a little racist. I only had one black kid and my school and she was from Africa adopted by white people. I grew up in NYC so it was a bit of a culture shock to me.

OOOOPS..........!! Sorry folks, it was not my intent to start a discussion on race. My original thinking when I stated 'north south divide' was actually about the policies. Is it a bit more liberal in the north than the south? Would Obamacare be more easily received in the northern states than the southern ones? Sorry about any confusion. I am aware that race is an issue in the states, UK has its problems too, so I am not pointing fingers.

I'm sure you didn't.

I also don't consider Indiana the "north" in terms where southerners migrated to the Midwest, hence having the cultural background of the South...just my opinion...it's also generational and the influence can be of MANY factors in terms of issues related to the perception of Obamacare.

To me, it could be more of a economical reception, especially for those who have had preexisting health conditions or worked with people who had preexisting health conditions and have seen he benefits; I think that this law is a start, and like moray laws in the spirit of a "more prefect union", if we need to tweak along the way, so be it...

LOL I think Indiana is it's own world. They definitely march to the beat of their own drum, at least in Northern Indiana anyway

Right, Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Even though it is... I don't really consider it south either LOL I consider it mid-Atlantic. I have family in md and would never think to call them "southerners" hahaha

Having lived in both the North and South for many years (and now living in the West), these are my observations:

If you live in the North, you think anything below Delaware in the South.

Maryland doesn't consider itself to be North or South.

Virginia does not consider Maryland to be the South. Virginia sometimes doesn't consider itself to be the South either. It seems to really like the "Mid-Atlantic" designation.

North Carolina barely considers Virginia to be the South, but that the South really starts with them (NC).

South Carolina thinks they're the start of the "true" South.

Everyone agrees that Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi is the core of the South. No questions about that.

However, Florida is NOT considered to be part of the South by either the North or South, despite being one of the most geographically southern states.

Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas are sometimes the South, depending on who you talk to.

Texas often considers itself to be its own sovereign nation.

And...

The West considers it all--North and South--in one lump known as the East

Well said. I've lived in NYC, vt, Boston, Pittsburgh, Arkansas, SoCal and central California. It always interesting to hear people describe Arkansas. It's either south or Midwest hahaha. I agree about Florida except for Pensacola since its basically part of mobile. ;)
