Is anyone out there having such a hard time with WGU?

Updated:   Published

Hi. I am in WGU's RN to BSN program and have started my first class a month ago and have tried the assessment 2 times and have failed it. I am soooo discouraged and want to quit. I had heard so much positive information on this school that I thought it would be a doable program. I don't feel its doable. If anything its hard. So not like an online course work. You pretty much get access to book for class, read modules and prepare yourself for assessment and if you pass it you get credit and if you fail you retake assessment but there is a but to this because after your second try of not passing you need to pay a 50$ fee for retaking exam:( I wish some people would have mentioned how hard these tests are....:( I soooo would not have started WGU. I don't know what to do:( I am looking into dropping out and starting with GCU... Anyone have any positive advice?

That class will not open for me until July 1st so I dont know much about it. I've been poking around to see what each course entails so I'll have a jump start. I think that shouldnt have been one of your first classes. Biochem doesnt look so bad so dont panic, stats wasnt bad at all. I was dreading it and passed the obj exam 1 shot n was totally surprised.

E2NURSE,

I don't start until 7/1, but if it's any comfort to you, Biochemistry is supposed to be a performance assessment class. So while you'll have material to read and learn, it doesn't sound like there's much focus on testing. Stats is an objective assessment class, so can you ask your student mentor if it would be possible to replace Stats with a performance assessment class this term? If not, best of luck to you. Stats is one of the classes I'm supposed to take the first term; if there's something I can help you with, let me know.

I've taken (since June 1): Care of the elder adult, nutrition, Health assessment, physiology. Taking stats test tomorrow and finishing up on physio lab so IF I pass stats (not my best subject), I'll have done 17 units in a month's time.

Irish123 - I'm only about 5 years behind you in age and believe me, you can do it! :)

E2Nurse - I'd definitely try a different class. They didn't start you with the usuals? (the ones above that I passed?).. Try care of the elder adult next if you have any experience with geriatrics.

I think they started me in the hardest class first. Which is why I feel its so difficult. Honestly I really was soooo excited to start wgu to get my bsn but now I am not so sure. I asked my mentor to switch out some of my classes I hope I can so I can begin to progress. I would much prefer to stay with WGU instead of going to another school since I am enrolled and already paid first term you know. I just hope they can help me out. Just because this school might not be a fit for me doesn't mean it won't be right for you ok:)

@oneflynurz thanks so much for your comments:)

@XmasshopperRN I appreciate your advice. I did what you suggested to ask the mentor to switch classes. I hope they will do so.

@FeatherzRN thats awesome you have finished that many units:) That gives me some hope:)

Hang in there E2Nurse, I hope they switch your classes for you so you can gain back some momentum and confidence. You can also request a new mentor if you have good reason ie, not getting help you feel you need or direction. Keep us posted :-)

Wow that's incredible? When you take a class do you do all the learning activities or do you focus on the assessments and skim the modules? Are you a speed reader? I'd be happy to do half that amount because I was planning to do two semesters with 17 and 18 units each.

I passed statistics yesterday, yay! :)

Depends on the class. Had to study hardcore for statistics because I started with zero knowledge. The others I knew something about, making it easy to study. The communities and the mentors are very helpful in most classes. I generally do not do each individual activity unless I think it's necessary. If I already have knowledge for an objective assessment class, I take the preassessment first and figure out what I am missing.

Now I am into the 'writing papers and doing projects' classes, which will slow me down a little. I do plan, however, to complete 35 CU this term. (after this w/e will be 17 down in a month so I have 5 months to complete 18 more).

Please note, I am not bragging and I am not smarter than anyone else here, of that I am 100% sure. :) I'm just good at test taking and can be single minded when I need to be. :p Some people are better at solo work, some people excel in more traditional classes.

Ugh, now I have to do papers. I hate papers! :)

Congrats!!!! I am really afraid to take this class as i really stink at math. I am going to take a remedial math class at my local community college to refresh my memory for algebra. Then i'm going to enroll at wgu. Do you need to know alot of algebra/geometry???? What kind of math would be helpful to help me pass this class??? This remedial class is going to cost almost a grand. Ugh!!

Hi I too am having trouble with this class. It is my first one also. Really curious who you student mentor is.

Hi, I just finished my first semester of WGU RN - BSN/MSN. What class are you having trouble with? Maybe I can help. I completed Care of Older Adult, Nutrition, Health Assessment and Statistics so far. Let me know and I'll try to help

Hi, how long did it take you to complete the bsn? I need 28 units, but this first class is making me nervous....i've been a nurse for 8 yrs now and the material seems familiar to me. I am reading what is optional/necessary and it all seems like I know it. Sorry talking about RUC 1...how many units/credits did you have to complete? Just curious. Any input on how I should study? Did you have a hard time reading the material online? I just can't stare at the (computer) screen too long....Please share any helpful hints on how i can better manage my studies. Greatly appreciated.
