Irritating spouses/family that don't understand?

Published

I understand that those who don't have medical experience dont understand some things. You don't know what you dont know....I get that. But sometimes I get so irritated by the converstions i have with my husband. He was seen in our clinic and was prescribed antibiotics. He reads his bottle and takes his pills and goes on and on about how his dose is "500 mg" and that's alot and he must have a really bad case and yada yada. I simply say "thats a pretty standard dose". And he's like "but its 500mg"! I try to explain by saying "you took 1000mg of tylenol the other day and it didn't touch your headache, but if you took 10mg of morphine you'd be flat on your @ss. " I get blank stares most of the time.....

My 4 year old daughter is super into being a nurse lately. She keeps grossing out her dad because she will go into in-depth description of how her poo was large, slimy, or slippery lol. She tries to take everyone's HR with her Doc Mcstuffin's kit and told me she wanted to work in "skeptical care" = critical care. My husband thinks because I am a nurse, he never has to see a doctor again. Um, doesn't work that way buddy.

Then there was the revolting issue of her six year old pessary. I will spare you the details in the interest of good taste and on account of it's lunch time somewhere in the world right now.

PLEASE tell us!

I want a T-shirt that states this now.

My husband does this, drives me bananas. He asks me a question, I give him an answer (the same that his doctor gave him earlier),and then he's off to the Internet to try to find out "the real answer". He then starts stressing out because he's reading some crud on the web. I look over his shoulder..."Bob's Prostate Blog. Yeah honey, now you have the facts straight about what to expect. Some dude (maybe) named 'Bob' (possibly) has to be right because it's posted right here for everyone to read. He must be right, not your doctor with close to 30 years of experience that we can actually verify".

It makes me nuts. I've had the credible website criteria discussion with him several times...but found 'Bob' back in the browser just last week:banghead:

LMAO!

Don't you looooooove when you are right, though?

Everybody on my husband's side of the family - including my husband - prefers to take the advice of "Bob" over me, even when it's very, very clear that "Bob" is wrong.

"Oh, you very obviously have another kidney stone? Sure, let 'Bob' tell you that all you have to do is cut out carbs from your diet to fix it..."

One nice thing about where I started my nursing career and where I continue to work is that the docs are more like friends and when I stopped one in the hospital hallway to fill him in one what my husband is coming to see him for this Friday, he agreed with me that labs need to be drawn as well as a culture.

Of course, he will keep it just between us and not tell my husband. Because I have no credibility there. :sarcastic:

My husband absolutely hates when I'm right, and yeah, most of the time it's pretty darn humorous watching his face when he chokes out, "I hate it when your right. How do you know this stuff anyway?" when he finally realizes that his urologist and his wife (a nurse) may actually know what they're talking about and 'Bob' is a bit sketchy at best.

What's not humorous is when he has to go in for routine screening just to make sure everything is okay and he starts gravitating to the infamous world of Bob and his creepy prostate web blog. Again, the same questions (It's like having another child and no, the answer is not going to change if you keep asking me the same darn question), he's worked up into another tizzy, and I have to live with him until he gets the results- not Bob.

Another one that annoys me to no end is Dr. Oz. People, the television show is for entertainment! It is not meant to be used as medical advice and one should not start taking any herbal supplements without first contacting their doctor. I don't know how many supplements have gone in and out of the medicine cabinet because the great doctor on TV had spoken about how much they could help this problem or that. My latest debate with my husband was why he should continue the script for zocor that his doctor had prescribed him and not self treat with red yeast rice:confused:

Do NOT get me started on Dr. Oz. The teachers I work with know that if they ever start a sentence with "Well, on Dr. Oz..." I will give them the stare of death and just walk away.

On another slightly related note, I also hate the fact that the show "Sex sent me to the ER" exists when teaching Sex Ed to MS and HS students.
