You can get MS Office for Mac, or use the comparable, cheaper Apple version: iWork (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, similar to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). The Apple version does allow you to save files as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files. I've used both MS Office for Mac and iWork. I find iWork much easier (and this is coming from someone who used PCs for 23 years vs. Macs for 5).
You want the native Apple programs, which are fully-featured and inexpensive. The iWork suite is Pages, which is so much easier and better than Word (even Word for Mac), Numbers (better than Excel) and Keynote (better than PowerPoint). All will open and work with any of the PC programs, e.g., Keynote will open and let you work with any PowerPoint.
I do a lot of writing and would never use anything but Pages.
I just ordered a new MacBook Air (coming in a few weeks) and it comes with quite a lot of software on it but I forget if the iWork suite is included. Heck, it's like $80. There are great tutorials on the Apple website for all of them, dozens, about 2-3 minutes apiece. Check them out before you make any decision. All my PC friends that have listened to me aout Macs for year that have changed over are ecstatic about it. Come to the light!

Thanks GrnTea.

There are iPad versions for all of them. Because the iPad doesn't have the computing power of a laptop, the iPad versions are a little less fully-featured for creation, of course. I do all my work on the laptop or desktop, but my iPad reads/displays everything I do. I use DropBox to keep everything synchronized and make it easy to access anything I do from the iPad.
Oh yeah-- I spent years on PCs too, when employers required me to use one, and there's no comparison when it comes to elegance and ease of use.

So I have both, and I now notice that there isn't a program for writing papers on it. So does anyone know of programs that are comparable to microsoft word? Thanks so much :)
