Internal transfers- your thoughts?

I want to apply for an internal position. My manager has a reputation of writing people up (which prevents transfers for 6 months) when learning of an app to another department. I know I cannot stay where I am for the long term, but I had been planning to stay at least a year. I am at the 10 month mark, only need 6 for an internal transfer. A position has come up in clinical trials, and I am REALLY interested. I have no experience in this, but would love to apply and see what it is all about. BUT I FEAR RETALIATION. So far I have no write ups, no call outs, and no tardies.

I have heard through the grapevine that these research spots rarely open up. I have also heard that there has not been a lot of interest in this one. I have no experience in it, but it sounds like something I would enjoy. I REALLY want to take a shot at it. But I am afraid of the consequences. I also work nights, so not sure how to talk to someone about the position. Is it possible to call HR on the DL? Any ideas>

If the transfer is what you really want, then I say go for it, but I would also make your concerns known to HR...what your manager is doing is workplace intimidation and she should be fired immediately! Good luck!

I transferred departments about 7 months ago. My old manager had a reputation for doing everything in her power to keep people on her floor. As soon as I put in for the new position, I emailed an HR rep and let her know about the application. I also let her know how unhappy I was on my floor and was ready for a change and if my boss tried to stall it I would start looking outside the hospital. A little risky I know, but it worked. She took it straight to her boss and I had absolutely no problems with the transfer...and have not regretted it for a minute!! Go for it, and good luck!!!

Go for it and watch your back.

I cannot tell you how many times I've heard of NMs bullying a nurse who wants to transfer. I know of many nurses who have found out that their current NM has either stopped the transfer, because the employee had to notify their current NM, or that HR notified the current NM, or that the two NM's in question talked and the new NM followed the wishes of the old NM in keeping the nurse on unit (not because of LOVE, LOL, but because they didn't want the hassle of replacement). That is not to mention those that will write up nurses to make them look bad. Those write ups will refer to dates that are several months old... totally fake writeups. I even heard of one nurse who noted the dates of two of the fateful 3 writeups. Two dates were dates when that nurse was not working...

When this is found out, you bet that nurse ends up quiting that hospital and going to another.

This is exactly what is going on with me right now. Currently work on tele perdiem and picked up cvsu perdiem because i was told full time was a few months away on tele. Wouldnt ya know, week after i got the cvsu job a full time job is posted for tele. Also being treated differently ever since...not really any incentive to stick around. Ultimately i think i will be better off...good luck with your decision :)

I wonder if there couldn't be a paper trail as sckimrn seems to have made.

Somehow talk to HR by email and mention that you have no negative aspects in your employment record (could she validate that for you) and intend to work for the hospital for a long time. That you would be interested in other opportunities in the hospital for such and such and was she aware of any coming available that you could look into since she has a grasp of the bigger hospital picture...

Then if someone should try to fabricate, you can go to HR and fight it with your email confirmation that you have a clean slate. See, if the NM tries to cover herself by backdating the writeups, she'd could be accused of falsifying employment records...

Doesn't HR think your manager is sketchy if she writes up people who have no history of writeups just after the moment they request a transfer?

I mean that just seems like obviously bullying behavior.

It's happened 3 times that I know of in my department in the 15 months I've worked at my current employer. You start to wonder what kind of dirt some of these managers have on upper management to pull the stuff they do!

I would go for it. I did that to get into the ICU where I was. I never told my manager that I was applying. I did the same thing with my new position too. I didn't tell them till after the offer for the position and needing a date to be able to start.

If you don't try I think you'll always wonder if you would have gotten the position.

I had tried to transfer at my old job, and a few of us suspected that a similar situation was happening on our floor. I got fed up and applied to an outside hospital. Not only did I get the new job, I got an ICU job which was a huge goal of mine anyways so I'm beyond thrilled!

If you live in fear that you may be written up when you've done nothing wrong, you will only start to become bitter and someone will suffer. If it isn't your spouse, family, patients, it will be you. Utimately you should go for your dream job because you want to! You shouldn't not do something because of rumors. Perhaps your manager would give you glowing recommendations? It sounds like you have a stellar record on the job...

If you don't try for it, you'll regret it.

My thoughts exactly. NIKE: Just do it.
