i know there's probably been some threads about this but i guess i just want to make another one.

i love reading insightful/inspiring quotes, or when i'm reading a book and i come across something in it that i have to write down in my journal, just to look back on it and be inspired again.

the friday night knitting club:

"i'll let you in on a little secret. we don't all love our jobs everyday. and doing something you have a passion for doesn't make the work part of it any easier."

"it doesn't?"

"no, it just makes you less likely to quit."

the glass castle: a memoir

sometimes you need a little crisis to get your adrenaline flowing and help you realize your potential.

gemma doyle series (libba bray)

an old beggar woman sits in the damp muck on the walk. she shakes a beaten tin with one penny in it. "please, sir, spare a copper."

kartik places a sovereign in the lady's cup, and i know that it's likely all he has.

"why did you do that?" i ask.

he kicks a rock on the ground balancing it nimbly between his feet like a ball. "she needed it."

father says it isn't good to give money to beggars. they'll only spend it unwisely on drink or other pleasures. "she might buy ale with it."

he shrugs. "then she'll have ale. it isn't the pound that matters; it's the hope." he kicks the rock in a high arc. it skitters down some stone steps. "i know what's it like to fight for things that others take for granted."

"what a wretched existence."

kartik takes on a hard tone. "it is a means to live. life isn't always fair."

the comment is meant to sting and it does. we fall into quiet.

"you're the one always speaking of fate and destiny. how do you explain their lot, then? is it their fate to suffer so?"

kartik shoves his hands into his pockets. "suffering isn't destiny. nor is ignorance."

i was wondering for all the nurses or nurses-to-be, if you guys have any quotes you wanna add? any quotes that inspire/motivate you in your life, quotes that you live by?

ok, my quote:

yoda

"ohhh. great warrior.wars not make one great.

or a story i like that has a yoda like theme:

on a large farm, a horse escapes from the fence. the farmer tells his son to find the horse and bring it back. the young boy stomped off to search for the horse, upset because it would make him late with his other chores. after a half hour, he returned without the escaped horse.

the father asked what happened. the boy explained "i cant find him, he's probably miles away by now. please dont be upset, i tried."

the father, disapointed in his son's lack of motivation to save the horse, went out to find it himself. he was gone three days, but returned with the horse.

the boy asked "how did you ever find him?"

the father picked up a stone off the ground and said "here, try to take this stone from my hand."

the boy easily snitched the stone away, expecting a trick, he was surprised he did it so easily.

the father said "no, i said to try to grab the stone, not grab it."

the boy look confused and burst out "father, i cant only try. i either grab the stone or dont."

the father replied "yes, now you see why i am upset you lied and told me you tried to get the horse."

a lot like yoda's "do or do not, there is no try".

"The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness, and the worlds deep hunger meet."

Frederick Beuchner
