Hi
I am interested in hearing from anyone nurse who works in any Washington DC hospital. My daughter is applying for work as an RN to be closer to her boyfriend. Any suggestions as to what is the best place to work, live etc.
Thanks, Gabby

Childrens: great facility, nice staff, I'm not sure how the pay is but its really hard to get a job there. There are a lot of background checks and endless paper work..
Washington Hospital Center: GREAT facility! I love this hospital. Pay only starts at 23 and hour I beleive.
Providence: I dont really like this place. It's a lil out dated and the staff aren't very supportive.
NOTE: I AM A STUDENT IN NURSING SCHOOL SO THIS IS ALL FROM MY EXPERIENCE DOING ROTATIONS...

Hi, I've worked at Washington Hospital Center for about 4 years- it really depends on what area she is interested in- some floors are OLD and seem dirty, another part of the hospital is newer and physically is a nice enironment. However, the shortage is evident there. I work in the ER- CRAZY busy, understaffed and getting quite dangerous (as far as keeping your nursing license goes). The ICU's are staffed well though- so it really depends what type of nursing. I've heard great things about Sibley though! Hope this helps!

I recently started a job at GW University hospital. Its in a great area of DC, they have a great internship program, and offer very good tutition benfits affiliated with the university. I live in Alexandria, VA which is about a 20 minute drive. Other areas include south MD and Arlington. GW is also right next to the metro.

This is the biggest local newspaper here. You can find anything in their classifieds including real estate or apartments. That should be a good place to get you started in finding a place to stay around here.

I worked at GW I found the bene terrible. Also got fired for being absent after they sent me home. Also had a doctor excuse. This was a week after they promoted me and gave me a raise. Go figure.
Fairfax hosp. terrrible environment no management support. good pay, good bene although they took five days of leave from us long timers. dont trust hr.
alexandria hosp. lov it.

Sibely can be a great place to work, depends on what your daughter wants to do. I would contact Susan Ackerman, Nurse Recruiter at Sibley tel number: 202-537-4000 or go to website: Sibley.org.
Sibley is in a well to do Northwest neighborhood, parking is free after an $8.00 charge for the parking card. I paid $85.00/month at other facilities. Children's probably has the best pay currently website:dcchildrens.com.
Stay away from Greater Southeast! they have many financial issues and are in bankruptcy again for the 2nd time, they're offerring contracts and people who have taken them have regretted it. Hope this helps a bit.

I was a travel nurse & have worked many places, but stopped travelling when I worked at Wasington Hospital Center to take a staff nurse postion. I don't think I'll ever work any place else. If you want critical care nursing, this is the place to do it. Great critical care course & orentation if you are new.
Thanks Criticare, one of my friends works at WHC and loves it. Sibley didn't work out for me, so have resigned after 3 years there, others love it. Childrens's can be a great place or a morass. I've never met anyone who is in the middle about that place. Unfortunately, part of the problem is defining what you want to accomplish and what best suits your needs. I say unfortunate because, sometimes, the only way to find out is by trial and error. The great thing about this area is that there are so many hospitals and specialties, you really can explore what u want to do professionally.
