Need help getting HR to return calls
Thanks, NICUFaithRN. She had been calling every other day, and actually caught the person at her desk one time! 3 interviews were set up at that hospital the same week, so persistence does pay off. (I see you work for the largest hospital in NOVA which, if my guess is right, is the same one.) She actually had 9 interviews over spring break and received 5 offers on the spot from other hospitals. So all's well that ends well.

Need help getting HR to return calls
Has anyone else had a difficult time with HR departments not returning your calls? How long does it normally take to connect with HR to get an interview? My daughter has started applying for jobs online as a May 2005 grad. One hospital in the Hampton Roads area called several times within a few days of application and she has interviews in several departments in March. Her preference, however, is northern VA or DC as she lives in that area, but they seem to be much slower to respond. One hospital called when she was in class and left a message, but the HR Dept. has not called back despite her leaving several messages. Advice and encouragement needed here to pass along! Thanks.

New grad pay scales around the state
Can someone tell me what a new grad (May '05) nurse can expect to make in different areas of Virginia, and who are the best employers to work for (in your opinion, of course)? Thanks. (I now realize this topic might not be appropriate for an open forum, so please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Thank you!!)

money
I was reading this thread recently as my daughter is considering a move from northern VA down to VA Beach after she graduates. She is getting her BSN from George Mason and will be graduating in May of next year. She has her eye on Sentara as that appears to be the most well-known. However, I am surprised to see starting salaries are in the $16-$17 range!! That seems rather low to me. Can someone let me know if this is still the current starting salary for new grad RNs in VA Beach? Thanks.

question for all with any charges from past
She was surprised too, especially since there didn't initially seem to be a problem. The crime was commited while she was already in nursing school, so that part was not a problem. She talked to her advisor after the rescinded offer, who was supportive and simply said she was going to have to prove herself more than others. But shoplifting is what it is, and I anticipate many, many hurdles ahead. I'm sorry to hear about your past and am sure you get tired of having to explain yourself over and over. I wish you the best of luck in the future.

question for all with any charges from past
My daughter, who is currently in nursing school, was arrested on a felony shoplifting charge that was dropped to a misdemeanor (petit larceny) 1 year ago - no other records, not even a traffic ticket. She applied for a summer externship this year and was initially offered the position, but 2 months later the hospital rescinded the offer. The nursing dept. said it was HR's decision based on her record, even though everything was disclosed up front. I'm just hoping she doesn't make it through nursing school only to discover that no one will hire her....
