with my job...
First of all, let me explain that I have only until May to graduate and take my boards for my BSN. I'm currently a LPN who works on a dementia until from 6a-6p every Saturday and Sunday.
Now, when I started working there, I was paid $20 an hour. I was happy, everyone was happy.
This past March, management took away $4.50 of my pay (supposedly weekend shift differential) and I was down to $15.50. BUT~ they offered to pay us weekenders 30 hours pay for 24 hours work. So we stayed.
Yesterday, we had a meeting. Now, there is NO extra pay, weekenders have to come in at 5:30a and work till 6:30p and get paid straight time. No extra hours. No nothing. That's an extra hour work for even less pay!
Issue being....I love my job, I love my people. I've been there 1.5 yrs. I need the weekend hours. This is the upside of things.
Downside...I need money as much as anyone else does! I have children to feed, a home to pay for! And no one else's hours or pay was cut..just weekend option. But they are gonna do it no matter what. No choice.
There's really no where else to go around here that won't take up extra pay in gas to drive, and it is less than a year, but I am so disappointed in all of this. Confused? Yes. Upset? Yes.
I may put in a few other apps tomorrow at LTCF around the area. What can they do? Pay me less than there?
They say they don't have the money....I say bull ....but who can I argue with? If they are cutting our pay, shouldn't they cut everyones? But no, it's just weekend shift. *SIGH*

Are there any other possibilities in your area, like home health or hospice? Good luck!

I'm sorry that this is happening to you. I would be upset as well! But you do have something going for you: experience. As the previous poster mentioned, if at all possible, I'd look around for another place to work.
Or, you could wait around and see if the situation reverses itself. You never know what might happen.
I wish you the best of luck, and I hope that you can either come to an agreement (whatever that might be) at your current place, and I wish you the very best of luck.
I agree with you. This situation stinks.

I am sorry to hear what has happened to you. That is unfair. I believe they should continue to pay you the rate you were making if not more. Weekend shifts should always be more in my opinion. I wish you luck, I would be upset too. Do you think all of you who are working weekend can talk to HR?

I am another LTCF weekend option worker who is being paid 40 hours for 32 hours of actual work. I can feel your pain.
If my current employer decided to do such things to their weekend option workers, I would resign without notice to show them that their actions were unacceptable. However, I understand that you simply cannot walk away from this job due to familial responsibilities.

If people quit and no one will work for the flat rate, then I guess they will "learn" to pay what is necessary to get staff.
Sometimes you have to talk by walking. The management has learned that they can treat staff badly, and staff will take it. Be prepared for more bad treatment.

Agreed. What about the time, energy and $$$$$$$$$$$$ you have
invested in your nursing education. Introduce yourself around
to other opportunities . You deserve the best! :balloons:

I had a similar situation happen, and I walked away. Problem was that the company did not learn....they just found some other poor shmuck to work there! and thats what will happen! there is always someone else out there willing to work for less!
stick it out if you can and find something else when you pass your boards!
good luck!

Its not just LTC that is doing this. A few years ago my hospital decided they didnt want to pay people working the extra weekend. Used to be they paid time and half if you worked on your weekend off causing you to work 3 weekends in a row. They didnt learn,, noone wants to do weekends and you are hard pressed to find anyone willing to give up their weekend hours to work even a 8 hr shift. Right now we have a few new grads freaking out about their student loans and they are taking all the extra hours they can get. But it wont be long and they too will understand why those of us with more time under our belt tell them NO.
During the meeting, 3 nurses announced they would be quitting.
The nurse I work with and another who is a Monday thru Friday and refuses to work weekends...(there's another, but I'm not as positive about her).
It's sad.
So now, they are going to have to pay extra for other nurses to cover the floor until they find someone else to come in.
Which is the lesser of the 2 evils? Pay time and a half for all the overtime to the nurses who are coming in? Or just keep the staff they have and quit screwing with our pay?

That is utterly disgraceful. I am so sorry for your ordeal. If this is your only employment option then I guess you need to stick with it...but you obviously have over 1 year of experience so maybe it's time to do pool/per diem/agency and only work weekend hours. Is that an option?
