I don't know much about Metro PCS, and I am just a pre-nursing student, but I bought an iTouch so I could get all the "nursie" things when the time comes. Right now, it's used to hold flashcards for my lab class, and all the documents I need for my lecture human biology class.
With all that you're asking...I'd probably recommend something either in the Blackberry line, if possible, or the iPhone. I don't know what would work with your phone company. Good luck!

I had a tmoblie dash which is a windows based smart phone. it had windows office mobile. which was pretty cool because i could take pictures in A&P make a powerpoint slide show and put the file on my phone instant flash cards! I typed notes in windows word and was able to look at them on my phone.
I would at least look at a windows based smart phone from htc. I don't know how compatible windows based smart phone are with downloadable books and nursing software but most software will tell you which operating systems it's compatible with. I know that blackberry's and plam treo are popular too but i couldn't stand to use either one.
Make sure that if you spend the money on a good phone make sure that it can take a memory card. That way you can expand the memory of your phone and keep everything in one place.
To add based on what the previous poster just said...check out the variety of nursing software out there and find out the general consensus of what phones that they will work with. That way you can pick one you can use down the line.

Just recently, the Kindle electronic reader created by Amazon.com and Nook, created by Barnes and Noble (which will be out in a few weeks) have been the craze. I don't know if these devices take all textbooks, but, they can certainly be used to also download PDF files, etc... Check out their web sites and see if these devices are worth your while. I am an avid reader and definitely plan to purchase one of these electronic readers within the next month or so. I need to conserve space and I am always pining over which book to carry for lunch breaks and bus rides. Soon, that won't be a problem any longer!

I am in the same boat as you! Metropcs is definitely the cheapest thing plan-wise, but phone wise is realllly expensive. I wanted a blackberry and its like 500 bucks for metro lol. I think I am just going to get a little PDA thing. You can get awesome ones on amazon for about 300 or way less. I'll lurk around here for a bit though. Good luckkk!

I have a Blackberry and I wouldn't recommend it for what you're looking for. I'm thinking of switching to an iPhone so that I can use digital flashcards (I'm usually walking around with 300-500 paper ones), and my mom (who is a nurse) is suggesting a ton of really great nursing apps. At gostudentnurse.com there is a good guide about the using the iPhone (or iPod Touch) as a nursing student/nurse.

I would def go with the Ipod Touch, I am in a similar situation as you are (except I only take one bus for 45 minutes, but it is still a hassle to break out the books) and use my Ipod touch for the entire commute. I have netters and make my own eflash cards, plus I put all the power point lectures on a power point viewer. I also use a mic (that I had to buy seperately for 15 dollars) to record the lectures and listen to them when I am walking to and from the bus stations (or when I am taking the metro to the shadier parts of town, and I don't want anyone to see my Ipod as a ATM). So go with the touch as you can get a used one for around 100 or a new one for 200 and there is always an app for that... If you do decide to get something else make sure that it remembers what apps you have paid for so in the event that you lose or break your phone you don't have to rebuy the apps or ebooks.
Good luck
oh yeah there are a crap ton of apps for nursing on the touch as well, so it will be a good aid when you start working too
Is there anything out there similar to the iTouch? It looks menacing and expensive lol.
Sadly there isn't. It is the only non phone to offer all the apps for as cheap as it is. There is the iPaq's by HP, but they cost more and are not as handy. You can pick up a used touch offline for around 150 dollars, and the new ones go for 200. Overall I love mine and just to view power points made it worth it. And its better then a phone because of the screen size and no need for a service plan or new contract.
