I'm in my program, second year but did not take one prerequisite? What should I do?

Published

Hello,

I got accepted into nursing school two semester ago and am on the deans list. I am doing really well and love nursing so far. My only concern is I did not take one of the prerequisites and I was going to perhaps take it this summer for peace of mind. It's anatomy and physiology and I feel like a lot of other classes really do tie into it. Do you think that this is necessary or am I just being stupid? Do you think I could get in trouble for taking it?

My nursing advisor got back to me and explained that my ap anatomy and physiology class from highschool passed as the requirement because I got a 5! She told me I'm covered but I can still take the class if I want to. Sorry for all the confusion. I feel so much better having it all sorted out. Thank you everyone!

Ooooo haha that makes sense.

I never took an advanced placement course in high school (wasn't motivated back then) but I know if you pass the AP exam you get college credit for it.

For my university, their policy is if you score a 5 on the AP test you will receive credit for that course. I still am going to take it though just because it will not hurt and the more I know the better a nurse I can hope to become in the future :)

AP courses are not considered high school level courses. Most regionally accredited universities accept high scores on the AP tests as equivalent to entry level (100-200) college courses.

You learn something new everyday, they say! This is very NEW to me that taking A&P is an option in at least one nursing program? whew! lol

I would NEVER take it again if you already have credit for it. You got a 5! You know your stuff! Taking it in college costs more money and is risky for the gpa because it can be a very difficult class. Also, they gave you credit for the class because of your 5---you can't get credit twice. So essentially you're taking it for no reason.

I say DO NOT take it. AP Classes are tough! They are the equivalent of college courses at the lower level. Don't waste your money

by taking a class you don't have to! You need the time for focusing on our nursing courses! Invest that money in buying a good NCLEX-RN review book for nursing school.

I am going to be the odd man out, because I LOVED my A&P class. I took it alongside my second semester of nursing school and came out of the course with a 95. My nursing class I had a 90. I also still managed to work some PRN on top of all that. I fund that A&P II was MUCH easier than A&P I because of my nursing foundation. Plus, you'll learn more in depth about some of the topics and disease processes you've already learned!

Wow, you got a 5 on the AP A&P test (heh, felt funny writing that out)? Good job! You must be a smarty pants. :) I probably would not take it again.

I agree with some of the previous posters. Don't take it again. If you think you need a refresher maybe you could audit the class? Then you get the refresher w/o worrying about the grade.

However, if you scored a 5 on the AP exam then you are obviously very bright and disciplined. You could buy a good A&P review book and read it yourself over the summer to refresh your memory.

For those who are unfamiliar w/ Advanced Placement high school classes, they are equivalent to a college level class. The test is scored 1 through 5. The minimum score a college will accept in order to receive credit for the class is usually a 3. The tests are tough. It's difficult to get a 5. The OP definitely learned something.

I'm in a similar position. It is a pud class (Interpersonal communication), but I will not be allowed to graduate and/or take my boards until its completed.
