I'm going to write up a CNA tonight.

:angryfire There's a CNA who has worked at this LTC for 5 years. She never gets her vital signs done. I have worked at this LTC for 4 months and I am constantly after her to get it done. All of the other CNA's always do their vital signs without any reminders ever. It seems that this CNA's attitude to us nurses is" I'll do whatever I damn well please. What are you going to do about it write me up?" Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't have time to babysit this CNA anymore. Thanks :)

I suggested making a copy of what she would write up, not of the filled-out form itself.

:chuckle I didn't have to write her up after all. I confronted her as soon as she arrived and told her I wanted her vital signs done by 12 midnight. At my LTC we use "inservice sheets" where we write down what we want nurses or CNA's to do. I had her sign my inservice sheet which clearly stated that vital signs are to be done by 12 midnight. I think she was "very surprised." She was very pleasant and helpful last night. Of course, I am keeping the written document she signed so I can attach it to a write-up if necessary in the future. Thanks everyone for your great suggestions!

I think you did the best approach. First you have to make very clear what the expectations are (yeah I know, like after five years she doesn't know) and the time frame you expect it done, feedback etc.

I hope even though it's her job, you gave her some props for getting them done. Positive reinforcement and all that jazz.

Good luck.

Just a thought....are you sure she is able to do them...or knows how to?

I've been in your situation before. I haven't had to write someone up in a while. First I will give a reminder.(I like my vitals before dinner)..Then I will tell them that if they don't want to listen or do the task...they will be written up..I might take them aside and ask if they need any help or refreshed in the skill. This normally gets the point across.

okay here's the deal y'all,is it true that all nurses after graduating from nursing school are stuck cleaning people's anals for the first couple of years, that's what I heard from one nurse.

:) Thanks again for your great suggestions! Yes it really is about getting the tasks done. I like the idea of making sure the CNA understands it is all about completing tasks and not a personal attack.

Not sure where you heard this but this is totally inacurate :angryfire CNAs do sooooo much more than just wipe but and so do nurses. Please keep reading this site.

That one nurse needs to buy a clue.

I have taken the an attitude with my employer as to this problem. They don't back us up. CNA's have been known to retailate nurses who have even asked them what's the problem is. Since it is so well understood that the place is run by the bottom up - why bother.

I once took my supervisor to his office to speak about an CNA who was out of order, almost caused injury to another CNA and a patient. The supervisor in front of me, picked up his phone, saying, I have had enough of this CNA, she was so out of line, dialed a fake number and complained loudly to the DON and Manager about the CNA. He was talking into thin air. Lovely way to pacify me,and continue the problem.

If people are allowed bythe facility to continue their behaviors, because they are related to so and so, or they are drinking buddies with so and so. This means we have a list of untouchables. Of course you know if you are on this list or not. I don't happen to be related to anyone at work, or in the entire town, and I don't drink, so I know I'm not an untouchable. It's all in who you know, or don't.

We recently got a new manager who isn't concerned about office politics, and things are getting done finanly. A breath of fresh air. I hope she stays, and I stay in her good graces. Change is coming slowly for the better, but it is still an uphill battle.

Having been in management many years I say if a person needs to be written up just do it. When someone accepts a paycheck for a job the requirement is that the job gets done. Stick to the facts, DOCUMENT, and write it up.

alas ...at times we are expected to be registered babysitters............i dont have time!!!my residents need me..and the cna's that is why we are there!!! :angryfire

This is exactly what's happening in my facility-worst part is i'm a fairly new lpn grad -4 months experience and 23 yrs old, some CNA'S have worked in the facility for over 5-10 years and my boss doesn't refer to me as a nurse at times (meetings ) yet she is an lpn just like me though with more experience-I know i'm the youngest(Lpn's & Cna's ) but i went to school and when i do my double shifts i'm the charge nurse and when i ask some cna's to assist they say we were not told to do that by "My boss" I can't wait to get another job !! rant
