The more nurses I speak to about this the more I hear about how long it takes to find stuff. Stuff like equipment, items from the store/stock room, finding information, keys, codes and the list goes on.
On one shift it took 35 minutes to find the bladder scanner because another ward didn't tell anyone that they took it to use on their ward. Drove me nuts!
Is this happening to you too? Would you spend 10 minutes everyday or a shift just trying finding stuff?

Absolutely, that and computer problems are the biggest time wasters ever!

Always. Just a simple sign out book is too complicated for people to sign so we could have a little accountability for items on the units. It is just so irresponsible for adults to be this way. Along with leaving staff rooms a mess...oh don't get me started. lol

Yep. We were fortunate that the renal floor was tight when it came to the sign in and sign out of their bladder scanner. My issue on nights was always standing at the central supply window for every pump and SCD machine I needed. Even if I called I still often stood for 10 minutes waiting for items!

Yep. Every weekend we are looking for supplies from other units. Very frustrating!

Just like I thought. That's encouraging that I'm not alone but also sad that it happens all too often.

I'm training at a new LTC facility. There are 3 floors with 2 units each. Today we needed a bed pan while I was working on the 3rd floor. None to be found on our unit. None on the other unit. So I went to the second floor to each of the 2 of their units. None. Went to the 1st floor. None. One of the 1st floor nurses told me there was a nursing storage unit in the basement, but I would have to find the key. Great, now Im on a key hunt. I eventually found the key, made my way to storage, somehow found the storage room they were talking about in the maze of the basement and FINALLY found a darn bed pan. If there weren't 2 of us nurses (because I was training with someone), how in the world would I gave had time for all that? So far I'm really liking the place, but like so many places, lack of supplies, or FINDING them, is a big issue.

Yep. Drives me crazy to look for IV pumps, poles, etc. If only everybody took pumps out their rooms when they were done using them, cleaned them, and put them in the clean utility room!
Wow that's crazy and frustrating. Why should you have to find a key! Incredible what nurses work find they have to work with.
Yep know that one too. IV pumps not cleaned and then have blood on them from a blood transfusion was really horrible to find. Not only had to hunt for an IV pump but also had to clean blood off it and who knows how old the blood was.

The best is never having anything on ur floor bc the floor above AND the floor below come to urs to take what they need...on top of that, the supervisor looks at ur floor as if we r disorganized and losing things!!
