My school never issued nursing caps to us, only pins. Whenever I see old pictures of nurses wearing their caps I have this urge to want to find one for myself, if of course it looked decent.

Think about it...most nurses haven't worn them since the 70's, but it stands strong as a symbol of what we do and who we are.

I would definitely wear one, but I'm the least likely to start a trend. :chair:

Nope - The cap I had to wear in school gave me a MAJOR headache every day. Would not want to go back to the cap!

I was still wearing a nurses cap in 1991 as a critical care nurse. I do believe that the nurses cap helps the patients and families identify who they are talking to. It seems with all the great trendy uniforms out there it's hard for the patients to tell the difference between the nurse and ancillary staff. I think that "white looks nice" to quote my mom, however it's difficult to keep that way. So.. in keeping with being modern, I wear a big RN pin that my name badge attaches to and I wear the most upbeat cheerful scrubs I can find. "NO" to the hat,those creepy privacy curtains have managed to rip my hair out on more than several occasions when I was wearing a cap... is that why my hair is so thin now? It couldn't possibly be age.... LOL

Nope, nope, nope. Have never worn one, don't want one. One more article of clothing to get peed, pooped, barfed, bled on.

Well said. The caps look like waitress / maid hats anyway. The only time we need to wear hats should be for practical reasons.

I say yes, as everyone including ancillary and clerical staff wear scrubs nowadays, blurring the lines of identification. Staff in doctor's offices wear white uniforms or scrubs (my 73 y.o. mother says things like, "the nurses in the doctor's office said such & such..." and I ask... "are you sure they are nurses?" and she says "well, they are all in white". My husband is also an RN and thinks health care facilities do this on purpose to give the illusion that there is more "health care staff" around than there really is.

Is it true (as I think I remember reading somewhere here) that RN's in the UK where white tops and navy bottoms? I like that idea also. There should be a way for patients to know who is who besides straining to read an ID badge, if it's even right side up.

I'd totally wear one, but I'm in the wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy minority. Personally I think going back to the cap w/ a uniform would do a lot for our professional image.

At the very least I wouldn't have to see any of my co-workers show-up in Eeyore scrubs. :rolleyes:

No way!! Why should we look like maids? Some of the patients think we are anyway, so why push the issue?

not in a million years. NEVER!!! I don't need a hat to make me feel like a nurse. I have a degree, license, and name badge that all say I am and that is good enough for me!

I have a lovely nursing cap but I won't wear it because of infection control and it wouldn't look too good with my scrubs.
