What would you want to do? If it is to remain in nursing, what area would be most interesting to you?
I am just throwing a wide net to see if there are others out there who are in the same boat. I've been doing ER nursing for a while and wonder when I'm ready, what else I will do that would be as exciting and not dull.
I have been in the ER for a long time (about 11 years now) and was recently approached about teaching in a BSN program. I think this may be interesting, but wonder if I'd get bored.
I also think in my future life it'd be great to do some type of nursing either on a yacht (think wealthy passengers) who need a nurse/doctor combo. I could take my spouse with me in this ideal job.
Or to work on an exotic cruise ship - not just to the Caribbean, but down the Nile, etc. That would be awesome if it was equal parts R&R with work. Again, option to have a family member with me.
What would others choose?
I've been in the ER for 18 years plus 2 years PACU concurrently. (Went full time PACU but still worked ER prn and as an agency nurse) I think I would like to explore several things. Maybe be a drug / medical equipment rep, look into offshore oil rig nursing, (yes, from what I understand everyone of those rigs has an RN or EMT-P on board), perhaps informatics... i dunno.
If I left ER it would be l&d. I loved ER and l&d in school. I was actually trying to get into l&d position recently (I was inpatient pcu) and an ER position in a level 1 came up. I tried for that to keep and improve my acute care skills. If I ever get tired of ER I would change. But honestly I was unhappy my first 2 years of nursing and I feel like I found my niche. I no longer dread going into work so that's a welcome change.

I left the ER a few months ago for IV nursing per-diem! I love the IV nursing, but still crave the critical care, and I find I LOVED caring for kids in the ER. I am obtaining my RN-BSN now so I am open that will open up doors so I can get a PICU or NICU position.
