If you were to move from ER...

What would you want to do? If it is to remain in nursing, what area would be most interesting to you?

I am just throwing a wide net to see if there are others out there who are in the same boat. I've been doing ER nursing for a while and wonder when I'm ready, what else I will do that would be as exciting and not dull.

I have been in the ER for a long time (about 11 years now) and was recently approached about teaching in a BSN program. I think this may be interesting, but wonder if I'd get bored.

I also think in my future life it'd be great to do some type of nursing either on a yacht (think wealthy passengers) who need a nurse/doctor combo. I could take my spouse with me in this ideal job.

Or to work on an exotic cruise ship - not just to the Caribbean, but down the Nile, etc. That would be awesome if it was equal parts R&R with work. Again, option to have a family member with me.

What would others choose?

I've only been working ER for 4 months now. I anticipate staying 2-3 years and then moving on to ICU and then to PACU (or maybe skip ICU completely). School nursing is another thing I'd like to try.

I would try PACU too. I sub as a school nurse when I can - not too bad. Bit boring. Looking to be a nursing school instructor part time next.

NICU, I work in peds ER and enjoy the babies

Move from ER?! I can't even imagine it! :D

Seriously, I would like to be on an IV team, or a rapid response team. Something like that.

Yeah, ED is it for me. Maybe an RRT or MET position would be fun though. But I could never work on a floor.

Ive always felt that ED and L&D have a lot in common so I guess I could consider that.

I've thought about flight nursing.

If (big "if") I left the ER it would be for retirement from bedside nursing altogether - maybe into informatics.

I like all of these responses. I think flight nursing, IV team (would be so fun!), maybe PICC placements, PACU - no more floor nursing ever again, been there done that, would get bored and fail to find the emergencies there and leave.

I am leaving nursing for another health profession and it is the ONLY reason I'd leave the ER, *laugh. I could never go back to floor nursing and have no desire to work for a doctor's fiefdom in ambulatory care. I've worked in same day surgery and pre-admission testing/OR holding, which was fair (because of the pace - hustle all day!) and awful at the same time (unit culture of misery).

Returning to school this fall, I'm wondering whether I should try for a per diem ED job to keep one foot in or just give it up entirely. It just feels too weird to not do anything at all.

staying Per Diem would keep your nursing foot in the door, not a bad idea at all. What's your new path, Amarilla?
