If an MD shoved you...

Okay, if, theoretically, of course, an MD shoved you, in front of a patient and the patient's family, what would you do?

Not just the fantasy answers (although, as nurses, we can be quite creative in coming up with revenge tactics ). Please evaluate what you would do as well as the possible consequences of your own actions.

If, however, you have a particularly irrisistible revenge fantasy, lay it on me!!!

Oh, come on everybody, if he really was a neurosurgeon I would hope he would be able to come up with his own lines instead of stealing Alec Baldwins from "Malice". It was a good movie though.

!!!Aren't you the same neurosurgeon who was shopping for a girlfriend in an earlier post??? Looks like you stepped into the wrong room.....

If nurses are so 'expendable' one of these days you may find yourself doing surgery by yourself, and tell me how you could accomplish that??? You may think you are 'god' but you are only a mere mortal like the rest of us.When patients go into surgery they and their families are certainly NOT praying to you. They are praying that you are really not the arrogant a## that you appear to be and that you wont screw up their surgery. They pray the nurses wont walk out on your sorry behind because you treated them like dirt. I've had enough of neurosurgeons especially who think they are 'god'. Go back to the rock you crawled out from under.....

No wonder you have to resort to a message board to look for company...

Before you all go spewing forth belittling comments about physicians and how they are no good, stuck on themselves, etc, we should analyze the above post. C'mon. I don't think this person is for real. A neurosurgeon reading a nursing website, and on bulletin boards no less! And then to respond! Highly unlikely.

If that surgeon is for real, that's too bad for him - but he may even have a point. I wouldn't want to be in his shoes and I may even be a nervous wreck. I may ask anyone who shows the slightest incompetence or lack of confidence to leave the OR. I certainly would not think I am God. Besides, this God-complex stems way beyond physicians. My ICU nurse friends tell me that they are on the top floor because they are closer to God.

So, like I said, before you go freaking out, realize this post may be fake. And also remember the wonderfully, talented, knowledgeable physicians we work with everyday.

I agree whole-heartedly with all previous posters. This is assault and battery. However, be cautious about one thing. It may be against hospital policy to make COPIES of incident reports. Don't put yourself in a position to be taken advantage of if the hospital wants to cover this up. Instead, write the incident report, then write a detailed letter reciting the same events and send it to the Director, Administrator, Hospital Attorney and cc it to the Physician as well, letting him know all of the above have copies. If you have filed a complaint with the police, let them know that as well. However, If you or the other nurses have retained attorneys, I would use that as my "Ace in the Hole". State in the letter that you expect a response in "x" numbers of days. If you do not receive a response, have your attorney contact the Hospital Attorney to proceed.

Good luck. We have enough to deal with on a day to day basis without taking this kind of abuse from our "colleagues".

Isn't it a shame that we have to waste our energies with temper filled Physicians and take care of their patients too. What would they do w/o us. If a Doctor shoved me I would rise to the moment and handle him like the worthless worm he is. I would be calm, cool and educated and teach him a lesson in respect, I have had to bring a Doc to an apology once. for the most part our docs treat us well. So sorry for the Nurses who have to deal with a Doc like that

I saw a doctor hit a nurse in the back with a chart one time. The whole thing was covered up by the hospital. More afraid of something hurting their public image than repremanting the doctor.

keep a journal(not just a note for incidents but something that you make entries in everyday ) Take names of witnesess date time everything. YOu might try saying in a quiet voice "assault is a crimminal offense not a civil offense." say it in front of everyone but don't shout.two funnies on this subject. I have been a nurse for so long we had a capping ceremony. a few years later no one was wearing caps. I read an article about a hospital in the east the doc walked on the station and the doc announced "I'm not talking to any nurses who aren't capped" so they all went to kithen and affixed coffee filters to their heads. next funny a lawyer dies and is talking to st.peter. he is told everyone in heven is equal. they get to the lunch line and someone in a white coat and a stethescope brushes past them and goes to the front of the line. the lawyer say "if everyone is equal how come that dr. gets to go to the front of the line. st. peter laughs and says that's not a dr. its God, sometimes he just THINKS he's a dr.
