If you feel sick the nurse will call me and you can go home

Seriously???? How can I even float the idea of staying to a 6 year-old who was told this by her mom upon arriving at school today? The kid is FINE. A little flushed, afebrile, nothing found on exam, just wants to go home. Really frustrates me and makes it hard to do my job when parents tell them this.

For me, I'm miffed at the parents that tell their actually clearly sick kids they can visit me and call home if they continue to feel poorly. Poor kid has actually tried to stick it out, but is miserable and comes to see me. I call parents who is (a) unreachable and has no other contacts; (b) reachable and upset that I am telling them to pick up their actually sick child; © reachable and upset that I am tell them tp pick up their actually sick child and telling me no one can pick them up or that someone can be there in 3 hours (when school is over), can they just rest in my office.

For the other non-sick circumstances, I'm a fan of telling my older kiddos - "I bet Mom/Dad said try. Not even making it through first period is not trying." I usually get them back to class for another class period before they return or sometimes they start socializing and forget to come back. But at least if I call the parent later, I get to say "they told me you said to try and this is their 2nd visit to me after trying." Some parents appreciate my "trying" and will reinforce the gentle "buck up" message. Some parents will pick up their kid. I can't stop it.

I got a call from my kid's nurse, she told me that her temp looked like it was rising, so she may be worse when she gets home and to watch her before taking her to the doctor. She was very nice and basically called my mom earlier too, so I basically knew what was going on. I told her thank you and told her that if she ever comes in, it's usually something for real because she knows better than to go visit the nurse just to go home early.

I just don't understand the concept of "If your child has a fever and they are sent home, please keep home for at least 24 hours." do parents not get? I know you have work, but if they had a fever in the morning before school, don't send them to school! At least do your child and you a favor and make it easier so I won't have to call you when you are already at work to get them because their fever spiked up.

My kid got a fever at school yesterday, she was obviously not feeling good. Doctor said it was viral pharyngitis, and to keep her home because she will get a fever. She stayed home! It's not that difficult!

I don't see why its so hard for them to keep them home either! If all of the parents would follow this simple rule, I'd be willing to bet we'd see a HUGE decrease in the repetitive viruses we see so much of. HELP END THE CYCLE PEOPLE!

Exactly! I had some children like this and the next day the came back and their fever got worse and I'm like seriously? I called mom and told them, don't bring them tomorrow. Keep them in at least for the day for the fever. Some of them argue but I tell them it's for the protection of the other children, your child and it makes it easier on you.

This. The kid that comes in, looks terrible, tells you they had a fever last night and this morning, but parent gave them medicine (ibuprofen, acetaminophen) and temp is something like 99.8 after said medicine...

This is my biggest pet peeve! My experience is that some parents do that for two reasons. 1) It will stop the kids from nagging you to let them stay home, and if they're really sick the nurse will call anyway and 2) it's easier to tell your boss you got a call from the nurse and you have to go get your sick child, rather than calling out for the entire day.

Bingo.

I get this every day I sub. Every school. Every age level. And I remember saying it a few times to my kids just to get them out the door. (Which I now regret and profusely apologize for to all my fellow SNs). It's even worse when the teacher brings them in and stands there like you're suddenly going to tell them the kid can leave with a temp of 98.2. No, get thee back to class.

A thought that just came to me in this snowflake age, at what point does not calling the parent constitute holding against their will?
