If you can say one thing to your boss, what would it be?

How happy or unhappy are you with your job as a nurse? If you can tell one thing to your higher-ups and get away with it, what will it be?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for getting into a shouting match with the DON about scheduling admissions. Yes, we need to fill up our beds, but 4-6 admissions on the same shift is ridiculous, and I commend you for saying so out loud. Now, go have a chat with the first shift nurses--if they take responsibility for an admission, they need to FINISH the darned thing. That might mean (oh noes) staying at work after their shift is "over" once in a while. If I can stay until 1am doing paperwork, they can stay until 5pm.

Also, thank you for coming in at 4am to relieve me when 3rd shift called off. I owe you lots of chocolate for that one!

The best thing about our unit is how the cohesiveness of the staff. We really are a team. We have become a team because we are united against a common enemy. That would be you.

We come to work each day because we have families to support. We do not have families to give us something to do when we are not at work. Regardless of your opinion of yourself, your bottom line is NOT our first priority. Our families come first, patients second, coworkers third...I think you fall into place around #65.

You have made decisions that compromise my family. I have young children. When you decided that EVERYONE needed to work 10-hour shifts, did you take into account that that would mean that some of us spend 2-3 hours with our children in a 24-hour period now? Does it concern you that multiple staff members have broken down and cried at work because they love their job, but feel compelled to leave because they feel like they are neglecting their families? Does it concern you that half of the department nurses DID quit or transfer out when you decided to change our schedules without consulting us? Does it concern you that you have 22 orientees being trained by traveling nurses who can't find telfa, let alone teach the new nurses (many of them new grads) about surgeon preferences or hospital policy?

You have made decisions that compromise patient safety. We have consultants following us around with clip boards to make sure that we turn the room over quickly. Some nurses cut corners to get turnover times down. We don't spend enough time with the patient prior to their procedure, our rooms AREN'T ready, and patients are the ones who suffer.

When we come to you with our concerns, "There's the door," is not an appropriate response.

It's not a question of luck. While your prospective employer is interviewing you, you're interviewing them. You have to decide in advance what's most important to you. I put the character of the people I'll be working for and with right at the top of my list.

I've discovered after 20 years in different sorts of jobs in healthcare that how the hiring manager represents her/himself in an interview isn't always the truth. It's been a big disappointment to me over the years to get my hopes up thinking oh cool this one actually does walk her talk. Sorry to say it has happened more often then not. At least my current manager has been the best so far. It's just her henchmen that are shady and lurking for issues to rake you over the coals about.

Suck it you bag! You are breeding a culture of dissatisfaction. It is not productive to harass your employees and threaten with suspension. Really the suspension is no longer a threat anymore because we are all looking forward to our unplanned vactions from the hell hole that this place has become.

 great idea!! It could keep them in perspective. :nurse:

I'm of the opinion that any supervisor should be able to do at least the job of their immediate ... underling? I can't think of the word. Inferior doesn't seem nice, though it's technically correct. IOW, if you can't do what the people below you do if it's necessary, you ought not be in that position. Managers should be able to flip burgers and work the register. Or change a bedpan if it needs done, for that matter.

I would say, don't expect new Grads to know everything and be free of mistakes. Remember when you " boss" started your nursing career, and remember the tough times you had as a new grad and try to imagine how these new nurses feel. Treat new grads the way you wanted to be treated when you first started your new job as a nurse. :)

1)Would it really kill you to tell someone that they did a good job? How come the only time anyone hears from you, it's to be reprimanded for stupid stuff? Then, you complain that "morale" is low..yes, because we've all had it.

2) Your complete lack of social skills, empathy and good old fashioned compassion astounds me..which leads me to number 3..

3) Obviously, you've sold your soul to the devil..

One of the other members said the statement in another post. I'll try to recite it, but don't know if I can.

It's from the Princess Bride????? or something. "Yes, I know you are intelligent, now SHUT UP!!!!!!"

This one I did actually say, "I'm sorry, Who are you?! Visiting hours are over."

"Oh, you're the replacement???!!!!! Well, it's nice to meet you."

The other things I would honestly like to say, really shouldn't be put into print. Guess it doesn't matter though. Whatever evil one puts out into existence, will most certainly return back to the original owner.
