How happy or unhappy are you with your job as a nurse? If you can tell one thing to your higher-ups and get away with it, what will it be?

Why do you call me to rush ice water into a patients room- while I have 7 other more pressing things going on all at once- while you sit on your bum and talk about the weekend plans???????
I don't understand- she is a nurse- thats the fun part about patient care- the simple things that the patients need! Take a moment to smile and talk! WHY would you pass that up, continually, with all patients, all the time???

LOL. Just cause you derive joy from patient contact does not mean she does. Just saying;)

From my experience, its not what you are doing, it's who you are doing it with. My performance on the floor is a reflection of the leaders of the floor and the manager. I have too many patients, can't take care of all their needs, not because I'm lazy and incompetent, but rather because as a leader, the manager does not care about her staff needs. I'm a huge fan of management working a day or two on the floor. I dont think they could handle it day in a day out.

For the 1st time in my Nursing career (since 2001) I'm thinking about changing my profession. I can't take it anymore. My boss has created a terrible working environment. She has came in and turned our unit upside down. She has given us more change than Obama promised during his campaign. The motto of each Nurse when they come in, "What has changed since I was here a few days ago?" We share in the fear of making mistakes. Communication sucks. We feel we can talk to no one without being retaliated against.
Now the new thing is she has decided to pit all of us against one another. She is interrogating each Nurse to find out what everyone else is doing while she isn't there. She wants each of us to rat one another out. I'm DONE!!!!!!!!!! It has become a shark pool from H*ll..

So now that our unit has gone from semi-private to private & I float 1-2 a week I would ask my managers the following: Why did you go & hire 2 new grads who can't float for a year when there is already too many nurses to staff the unit now?

I'd be tempted to tell her, "Thank you for being proactive and taking ownership of your documentation," just to mess with her. I actually have told her, "I love my stupid job." Because it is. And I do.

That I'm fed up with unsafe staffing ratios. I understand that it's sometimes impossible to find a replacement for a sick call... however, when you don't even try because it costs too much $$$ it's unfair to both the staff and the patients. Being understaffed every shift causes more sick time and greater staff turnover. When half of your staff calls in sick for a shift you need to either call somebody in or close some beds.
