I want to quit!!!!!

Published

So I am in my first semester of junior year in a BSN program. Honestly I hate nursing. I want to quit. I'm not sure what I would go into if I do quit, but I'm positive this is not where I want to be. I DREAD sitting in these five hour lectures and then spend my weekend being stepped over by the med/surf nurses in my 12 hour clinical. I want out, but then what else will I do. My big dream is to own my own business, but what will a business degree get me in today's reality? I have no time to myself and its made me so depressed working hard for something I don't care about. I can't even talk to anyone because all they want is for me to push through saying it will get better.... But will it? Its so stressful and I'm not happy at all. I'm on the verge of failing medsurg (I'm two points away from passing with two exams and a final to go)... If I fail and have to wait a year to retry I can't picture myself coming back... All this stress and misery for what? To graduate work long hours and STILL be stressed and miserable?. Idk I guess I'm just venting...back to class our break is over :(

This sounds like it's beyond the usual, "nursing school sucks, I'm so stressed out" posts we often see. If nursing isn't for you, there's nothing wrong with dropping the program. It happens. Nursing school can be a hard reality. Few of us know EXACTLY what nursing looks like when we go to nursing school, even if we've worked in healthcare.

Take a little time off and re-examine your goals (though it sounds like you have some idea). Have you considered seeing if you can work at a salon, or even at a company that makes hair products, so you can get your feet wet there, and be HAPPY. Even better if you can work a little in a field before you invest your time and money in schooling, in case it doesn't make you happy the way you imagine.

I agree with our posters: completing a degree in nursing is not in your best interest.

There's no rule book that states you have to have a degree to own your own business. If that's your dream, then go for it. There are many opportunities for women in business, especially when it comes to getting funding. You shouldn't continue to pursue nursing if you hate it so much. Only do it if your heart is in it or you will just grow to resent it more.

Best of luck to you :)

What brought you to nursing in the first place? Owning a beauty business is a far cry from nursing. Just look at all the specialties on allnurses; you don't have to work the bedside. Occupational health and working for an insurance company are two examples that are away from the bedside. There's healthcare management bachelor degrees that don't expect you to have an RN or background in healthcare.

The nursing profession is not made for everyone! If you know deep down that it is not for you, then pursue something that you are passionate about.

Go for your dreams ...not what you think others want you to do!

Chances are the first 2 years you have taken could be transferred, as they should have been core/liberal arts, etc. see if you can change to something else.

I hate the job, but am too old to change . You sound younger and have a chance.

Go with the hairdresser thing. Maybe as a business, you could go to people's houses, nursing homes, etc, and do hair that way. I would think you may have to work for someone else at first though to get experience.

Good luck

You could still change your Major. You might have to go another semester and/or summer classes but if your calling isn't Nursing but go into the Beauty industry is, then go for it!!

Thank God I'm not alone in this one. I hate nursing too but I gotta do it since I need the money.

Nursing is really a tough road and it's hard. Maybe you should save up some money and open up a business.

Honestly, do you even need a Bachelor's in Nursing? Is it important in order to work at a hospital? Registered Nursing is only two years and you can get a job.

I feel for the OP. I can somewhat relate. I have never liked any job I've ever held, nursing or non-nursing, due to my personality.

I'm not a person who desires to be needed by patients. Unlike other nurses in this profession, patients and their family members don't exactly brighten up my days, so I smile and act as if I am pleased to see them.

I don't dislike nursing, but I don't particularly like it. I continue to report to work because nursing is a lucrative means to an end and a well-worn path into the middle class. Nursing is nothing more than a means to an end for me, although I have not yet figured out what the end shall be.

^ same plan for me. I'm only in it for the money, and I hate when people tell me that's not the right reason for getting into nursing, but at some point in my life, I would like to make more than 40K. Cause that's where I'm currently at, and it's a struggle. So I'd rather be stressed but still get paid for it and have career advancement opportunities that would never even be an option in my current industry with the education level I currently have. So I don't know what the final destination will be, but I know nursing will get me there.

I think you should follow your heart and do what is right for you. Nursing is hard and if you don't like it in school, you'll despise it in real life. Get your business degree and a cosmetology license and open up that business.
