Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am currently attending Broward College and I failed my chemistry class with a D :crying2:. I heard from tutors and from other nursing students that getting a D, an F, and even a W looks bad on your transcripts. I also dropped/withdrew out of my chem lab because the professor was just getting on my nerves. I ended up getting a W. Now I know that I should take the same professor for both classes. Anyhow, My gpa went down too. I use to have a 3.54 and now I have a 3.04. Im worried that I wont dont do good in the other classes that I have to take such as Anatomy and physiololgy and Microbiology. I also got a C in intermediate algebra so Im assuming thats what also brought my gpa down. I dont wanna change my major but that D that I got in chemistry is making me feel like I wont make it in life. I really want to become a nurse but im afraid nursing school wont accept me even if I take chem and chem lab over and get an A or a B. Please I really need advice and help. I dont want to give up my dreams of becoming a nurse over a chemistry class. Do I still have a chance of getting accepted into nursing school even if I retake the classes?

You need to find how and what the programs you want to get into look at. More than likely, to have a shot at nursing school, you'll need better than a D in chemistry and you'll also need the chemistry lab. Find out your prospective schools' retake policies - some only look at the grade the first time you took the class, some average the two together, some only look at the most recent grade.

One thing that stood out is that you said you dropped your chem lab because your instructor was "getting on [your] nerves." The thing is, you only hurt yourself. That's your "W" to have to overcome now. The road to nursing school is hard enough without shooting yourself in the foot over an annoying instructor.

Try retaking the Chemistry. An online class can do wonders! It won't count for a lab score, but it will raise the lecture portion and replace the D.

As far as the motivation goes, you have to find a way to motivate yourself. As a nurse (or whatever profession you may choose), no one will be there to cheer you on for doing your job. Find something that is important to you (the salary, helping others, supporting your family, etc.) and use that for your motivation.

Everyone has hardships in life, Success is measured by how well you handle them.

good advice in above posts - I agree... your motivation must come from within.

don't feel bad. i had to withdraw from my chem class a yr ago because my instructor was horrible. and then i took a & p with an amazing professor and got an A. Do not let one simple grade stop you from chasing your dream. Life is all about learning experiences! keep your head up and continue to strive for your personal best. good luck!

I would retake.

Unless you have virtually NO COMPETITION for nursing school then I would seriously consider retaking those courses. IF where ever your applying take those classes into consideration, that is not good and will not guarantee you in the program. Most programs have a limit, like a C or above is needed and no exceptions and that includes a C- being below a C.

Just because you aren't good in these classes doesn't mean you fail anatomy, physiology or microbiology. You just found out your weakness. Now you need to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try again. You now know you need to work extra harder in these classes.

Good luck
