I really want to thank...

the person who told me about alcohol/water in a zip lock bag for ice packs. (Did you like my click bait! :)) I'm almost certain it was someone on this board!

At the beginning of the year I splurge on my budget a little and get reusable ones, but by this time in the school year they've all mysteriously disappeared.

The rubbing alcohol and water "ice packs" are my go-to, and they're perfect!

Our health director won't let us use rubbing alcohol in our ice packs, because the students could possibly open it and ingest it. It's a great idea if you can trust your students.

I wish I could do that!!! I don't trust my students at all. I have several kids who will poke themselves with a pencil just so they can come here. I could only imagine what they would do with an ice pack!

What ratio of alcohol:water?

I use a little 3oz cup and do one of rubbing alcohol and 2 of water.

Oh, boo. That sucks! Luckily I haven't run into the problem with them doing anything weird with the ice packs. I definitely see my share of kids doing dumb things to try and get to the nurse, but I haven't heard of anything being done with the ice packs (and I know my teachers would be the first to let me know!).

It sounds like a great idea but it wouldn't work for us because of the alcohol/water mixture - kids would be drinking it. Our district just went thru and got rid of the alcohol based hand sanitizer because kids were getting loaded off of that.

You can also do 2 TB salt to every 2 C water to make a slushy like ice pack that has no alcohol in it (for those that need an alcohol free option). Salt changes the freezing point so it doesn't quite freeze solid, making it moldable.

I've even caught my 5th graders eating the ice out of the ice packs I hand out. I used to have 12 blue ice packs and I'm down to 3. It's a miracle they don't bust those open too

I have gel ice packs that the kids just loooooove to cut or squeeze open. I don't get it. When I have to use ice in a baggie I make sure to tell the kids the ice is dirty (my buckets aren't cleaned because I don't intend for anyone to consume the ice) but I'm pretty sure they eat it anyway. I would love to see the look on a kids' face if they decided to eat the salt/water combo.

lolol....sometimes I look at an icepack and just think "id love to drink that!!"
