I need you guys, i think nursing is making me mentally ill

i swear i feel so mad right now I can cry. i need to vent

okay so I work 12 hour shifts from 7 am to 730 pm

and boy it's hard since it's usually 6-7 high acuity patients

but this ****** oncoming nurse is just a really bad way to end the day. she comes in, just in time to give report then she makes you wait while she browse through which takes about 30 mins more and you're so tired you can die right there but she doesn't care. finally when she's ready it takes 15 minutes one patient at a time because she just DOESN'T LISTEN!!!!!!!!!!! she interrupts me, she doesn't let me speak myself, she butts in and butts in, she doesn't effing wait to hear what you have to say, i have to repeat myself like 5 times, and she wants to review the whole effing which if she just would listen i will give her all the pertinent information. She corrects me when there's nothing to correct because she DOESN"T LISTEN and i end up correcting her assumptions again. Bottom line she acts like a know-it-all who is really stupid and very inconsiderate. I think I should I write her up, I need to get done on time. What do you guys think?

i'm a new hire and fairly young. so i work extra hard for i feel like i need to prove myself. and i'm so effing tired of nurses like this who act all superior when they dont do half the **** i do. some nurses who got comfortable doing their jobs they just dont care and they've been in the facility so long they're laissez faire. i hope someone could relate to this. i feel so unholy right now with all the anger i'm feeling. i guess i keep it all bottled up. i always smile try to get along with everybody, always extra kind. i wasnt even faking it it's just the way i am but now i feel like i'm turning into monster. because i realize nobody freaking care everybody is for themselves. if you're kind they take advantage of you. and i'm tired of it, but if i do speak up idk i just dont want to be ganged upon since im just here for half a year. and they're like decades or half a decade, see all new nurses leave.

Re: report time.....I had to give report for the 27 bed med-surg floor. And I started on time. A couple of mornings of nobody left in the report room, and people showed up-- I always made sure the charge nurse had report and she wasn't the "late" problem. I told them that the shift started the same time every day, and constantly being late was not MY problem. (of course you can't just leave, but you can start talking....). I reciprocated by being on time for them to get out of there. :)

Obviously, people will be late at times, but a pattern is just passive aggressive. If there's a chronic problem, scheduling needs to be adjusted.

These are attempts to control the interaction from a "Parent-Child" perspective. You have to force the interaction back to an "Adult-Adult" interaction. Refuse to be a child being quizzed by a parent- be an adult giving information to another adult.

Tell her you'll be ready to start report in five minutes. Smile, and pleasantly suggest that if she truly needs to to look things over for 30 minutes ahead of your report, she should begin coming in early rather than make you stay late. And then start report in five minutes.

When she asked questions at the end of report which I had already answered, I politely but firmly told her, "I already told you that information, which you spoke over. If there is any other information you failed to hear, the charge nurse has my phone number. I am leaving on time."

I'm dealing now with someone who just walks away from me when I'm in the middle of giving report. I've given up on it and have just started standing there talking to air when she does it, and if she has questions I tell her "Well, I was at the bedside giving report, where were you?" She still hasn't gotten it yet. Sigh.

When you return to your shift be an ass when she gives report to you. Interrupt, walk away inappropriately, demand she answer a question you'll know she'll cover in report, turn around to look at someone else as she's giving you eye contact! All of these things have been done to me too! I hate it!!

Perhaps giving her a taste of her own medicine will do her some good!

PS. I really don't recommend this! I feel for you, really I do! Being a newby, you really don't have a lot to lean on, and treading on toes can lead to termination. So, be assertive and let her know you're on to her game!

I understand you completely!!!!! I work with a traveler who has been in nursing for 28 years....within the first 10 minutes of meeting her, she had to run down her resume to me about how many units she has worked on and how great and awesome of a nurse she is. I have been in labor and delivery for about 5 months now, and she knows I am new. She tried to intimidate me in report one morning. She butted in with everything I was saying in report. I ignored her butt ins throughout my report, and what ended up happening was that she asked a question about the patient AT THE SAME EXACT TIME I WAS TELLING THAT PARTICULAR PART ABOUT THE PATIENT IN MY REPORT!!!!! My point: ignore the butt-ins and continue with report so that you make sure you cover what you need to cover....at the end of report (as I am sure you do), ask if there are any questions......that's when the next shift can and should do so!!!!!

Anyone else have trouble with her taking forever and pulling this BS? I think you might have to speak up and confront her nicely about how this is puttin you into OT.

Other ideas:

Standardize a report paper with VS, I/O etc.. all that crap you need to talk about. Hand her a copy so she can follow along. That way she will know what you will be talking about.

If she is looking through the charts (I had a nurse do this to me as well) I would start report anyway. If she tells you to stop, tell her that you can't, you need to get out on time and keep going. DON'T STOP. Then wrap it up and LEAVE.

Right now you cave and she takes advantage of you and that is BS.

I have given report to all of the above nurses. What a nightmare. My favorite is the one who says I know it all,and I don't need report.

I protect myself by charting report given to Joe Blow and care handed off, then I put a little blurb about anything I think is really important. For example. I might chart oncoming nurse notified that pt is a fall risk, still needs to recieve Vancomycin and have CBC redrawn.

That way if this stuff is not done no one can say I didn't give report on it.

Nope, she just thinks she's all that.

The best was recently when I was giving report and she walked away, and the sassy LOL yelled out "Girl, oh no she didn't just walk away. Get back in here little girl, you gonna take care of me you gonna hear about me!" Priceless.
