I am sick of hearing that I get preferential treatment because I am a male. I have had women tell me to my face that I was accepted to nursing school over them because I am a male. Absolute garbage. At my school all that mattered was grades and the entrance exam. If I got in and you didn't its because I was a better student. Period.:angryfire
Heard today that a girl in my critical care internship applied for the same job on the Trauma SICU as me(she interviewed the same day as me), and said I got it because I was a guy. She had previous experience as a RN and I was a new grad. BUT, she has the reputation of having a bad attitude. I would be willing to bet that I interviewed better than her as well.
Its just such a cop out. Sorry to vent.
Oh yeah, and no need to :bowingpur. :nuke:

Okay yeah...sorry but there is no special treatment at the boards...so anyone that passes should be offered the respect no matter what sex or color they are, and of course respected on their personal style of treating patients professionally and compassionately!
Sorry you were taunted by this! I got some taunting because of my age at my first job, but they soon learned I was no young upstart (and get this...I was 32! And they thought I was a young 20 something year old with...lord knows why...no values or brain?!?!?).
But then again you can go by my old standard! They taunt and tease because you are better and they are scared of loosing their job to someone better! Or they have to 'game up' and start doing things they should because you set a good example! :)!!!!!!!!!
Don't let the turkeys get ya down, cause turkeys poop on their own legs, have the brain the size of a pea, and can't say anything better than gobble! LOL!!!!!!!!

I would chalk it up to jealousy and people not taking accountability for themselves. I'm thrilled to see more males entering the field of nursing.

I agree totally! I would bow but I had 6 over 300lb patients this weekend and NO CNA to help (we were short a nurse, so no help at all!) and my back and shoulders are killing me today...LOL!
So I will do the typical nurse bow that consists of holding ones back, grabbing onto something stable, bend the head, and still struggle to stand back up to you! LOL!

As for the crack from the person who dissed you, just consider the source,

As a male nurse im often called to do almost all the lifting on the floor. Im expected to take all dificult families and patients. The theory is they behave better for a man. Also im drafted to make other nurses calls to hostile doctors due to fear.
What ever happen to the women's lib movement?

i'm a female, and this type of behavior ticks me off.
i resent the quivering-female-nurse-hiding-behind-the-great-big-male-protection figure.
and 'they' wonder why we have an image problem...

Well people should bow in front of us in awe and wonder :bowingpur They should feel lucky that we men will look upon them! LOL
I too get that whole...you got the job because you are a man. Whatever. I also get to pick up the heaviest people and carry the biggest pieces of equipment because I am a guy.
I mean it is really hard to be me. To have to do everything and still be eye candy is tough sometimes.

I've heard that some physicians who yell at female staff members wouldn't even think of screaming at male nurses. Society still bestows a certain level of respect upon males, while having the tendency to marginalize females. This is my firm belief.
To the OP: I'm sorry you're dealing with people who think you receive 'freebies' because you're a man. You seem to have earned everything that has come in your direction, and I commend you.
I hear you there. I am 6'4" and being big doesn't help my back. I have been asked to lift 300lb patients out of bedside chairs with no help. Or when the patient is transporting by bed and the IV pole gets stuck under the bed, who do you think is asked to lift the entire bed with the patient in it up so the IV pole can come out.
I worked construction for 7 years. I swung a sledge hammer for a good majority of those years and did extremely hard manual labor. No job has been worse for my back than nursing.
But I will lift your patient for you, no problem, I am man... hear me roar!

:hlk:You know what irritates me... is that my facility will NOT put XL gloves in the patient's rooms. I have to carry a pair on me. What kind a crap is that?!! Do they not realize what all goes into pockets and yet they want me to put my gloves in there. To make it worse... each room has a hanger for 2 different box of gloves and both hanger in ALL rooms has TWO medium gloves boxes in them. Grrr
