I am a male RN, now bow down.

Published

I am sick of hearing that I get preferential treatment because I am a male. I have had women tell me to my face that I was accepted to nursing school over them because I am a male. Absolute garbage. At my school all that mattered was grades and the entrance exam. If I got in and you didn't its because I was a better student. Period.:angryfire

Heard today that a girl in my critical care internship applied for the same job on the Trauma SICU as me(she interviewed the same day as me), and said I got it because I was a guy. She had previous experience as a RN and I was a new grad. BUT, she has the reputation of having a bad attitude. I would be willing to bet that I interviewed better than her as well.

Its just such a cop out. Sorry to vent.

Oh yeah, and no need to :bowingpur. :nuke:

Do they actually put them in your patient's room? My supply gal has a lot of gloves for me but management tells me to carry them in my pocket because it would cost too much money to place them in patient rooms.

I was not happy the other day because I was spoon feeding a very elderly lady her meds. Afterwards she threw them up. The gross part about it is her food on her tray has thicken it...so her vomit was thick and slimy and I had NO GLOVES in the room. I had to stick my hand in vomit to help ensure her airway. YUMMY

Being in the SICU I only have one or two patients max, so I only need usually one box/shift. Which I usually go through a whole box, but I stock my rooms with a new box every shift.

I love being a guy in nursing. There is only one other guy at the facility I work at. His nickname is T.G.N. (token guy nurse) and I am T.G.N. jr. (token guy nurse junior). :specs: Seriously though, most people tell me they have an enormous amount of respect for me. What guy wouldn't want to work for a profession where there are women everywhere, good pay, and admired by the general public?! I am surprised they aren't signing up in droves....

I would personally love to see more males in nursing - so they can help me lift heavy things. :lol2:

Just kidding. The male nurses I work with have been great (and maybe it's an individual thing but those individuals have not become involved in the backstabbing and general nastiness that can happen in workplaces where many females are employed). Much more pleasant environment. :D

For the record I would never hide behind a male nurse to argue the point with a Doc. I find that distasteful too.

Kudos to you for getting as far as you have. Keep up the top work.

Nicky.

As for male nurses, I don't think they get special treatment. If you got that job, you earned it. The heck with women who blame there gender instead of owning up to their real ability as a nurse.

Oh well. If it's any consolation, when I worked in an engineering office every woman there allegedly got their job ahead of other candidates because they were women.

Sorry you're going through this, but do remember it happens to a lot of people on both sides of the fence every day.

Congrats on your new job.

Nah - you are getting "preferential" treatment because you come across as a competent professional. You were hired on your merits and what you could potentially contribute to the unit. Try not to worry about what others say out of jealousy and spite.

Frankly, my workplace is evenly split between men and women and I am quite happy to find an easy comeraderie between all of my coworkers - no matter their gender.

Congrats on getting the job that you deserved to get.

The glove issue is a pain in the kiester. Does anyone notice that cath kits all come with size 7 gloves? I wear 8-81/2....

Yeah that is a pain. You have to bring a cath kit and then an extra pair of surgical gloves. I even had to do it that way for a check off in college. I found it a little annoying because I had to do the extra steps and nobody else had to.

thankfully 7 1/2 gloves work great for me... I have dainty hands.... :lol2:

Unfortunately, ever since affirmative action and quotas, people always worry about reverse discrimination, that's what the OP seems to be sensing. People think that minorities who get ahead don't do it on their own merit, but because management is trying to get their numbers up. That's too bad.
