Hi guys, I am so happy today i just got my TWU acceptance letter today.. wheww I was so anxious.. Well I am just so happy thought i leave a message

Specializes in Oncology Unit.
that's when i'll be there!

anyone know anything about TWU-H's nursing program?

Hi I also received my acceptance letter this week from TWU. I had my immunization done and sent in my confirmation to attend the school of nursing. Everything is turned in. The only thing I have to prepare for is the NET test. I am also currently taking pathophysiology. Patho is a time consuming course because UT houston breaks this course in two semesters but TWU has it for only one semester. I hope anyone out there who has been accepted for spring 2005 is currently taking patho or else is going to be a hectic spring semester. Just a word of advice from a TWU houston student. BTW parking is expensive.....

Good grief! Am I the only one who didn't get in? :::hanging head in shame:::

well, that's intimidating! i haven't taken patho. :stone haven't had women's studies or multicultural studies, either. not even offered where i go currently. when i got my acceptance letter, it also said that i have to take college math before i graduate, but i already have. well, it was technical algebra and psych stats, but a while back when i emailed them about it, they said it was fine and i didn't need anymore. :uhoh21: oh well, guess i'll live.

I took Patho last year in anticipation of getting into the TWU program. There were a few people in my class from the nursing program who had failed it the semester before and had to retake it. I took it at the Denton campus where it was supposedly easier than the Dallas campus.

WHOA! Have you heard anything about the class taken at the Houston campus? Maybe I should take class difficulty under consideration when planning out my class schedule. Geez. I wonder if this class is offered during the summer.

No, I don't know anything about the Houston campus. But if you can take it beforehand or defer it to the summer, I would. It's a difficult class and very time consuming. I can't imagine taking it along with other nursing courses. I only had 2 other classes that semester so I had a lot of time to devote to it.

Thanks for the tip. I may go ahead and take it for the spring semester then drop it and take it during the summer if things get really tough for me.

My professor was a man, can't remember his name to save my life though. He was a short, quirky man that told lots of stories about his relatives. But he was also a biology professor and not a nursing instructor. I'm sure that puts a totally different slant on the material.

has anyone heard anything from the college of nursing since they turned in their acceptance packet? I was assuming I would receive info on scrubs, stethoscopes, name tags/badges, etc. that we need to order during orientation, etc. but havent gotten anything yet.

I turned mine in to ***** (secretary) at the Dallas campus and just wanted to make sure that it got to where it needed to be...

No I think that would be covered during the orientation on dec 10. Besides taking the NET on Nov 20 I haven't heard from them yet.

Hi there! I am currently a Junior I at TWU and I am so happy the semester is almost over!

If your orientation is anyrhing like ours was, they will money you to death. First, you have to pay for the background check. Mine was only $20 because I have lived in the Dallas area all my life. Some people who have lived in several states, etc. had to pay as much as $200. TNSA will try to get you to buy uniforms through them. My suggestion is don't buy them. I did and they were cheaply made and the lab coat was 5 sizes too big. There was a lot people exchanging. It was a big hassle. Just go to a scrub shop, or even Wal-Mart and get a white top, maroon pants and a long lab coat. Then, buy a couple of TWU patches at the bookstore (about $2) and sew them on. TNSA made it sound like you were getting a good deal because they sew your patches on for you. I would buy the name tags though, because they are a hassle to get made up anywhere else.

Next, they will have you sign up for a CPR class (I think it was about $30). You can take it through them or get it elewhere. I took it there, it was much easier because you need it before you start clinicals. Of course, you get a discount if you join TNSA. I ended up spending $300 that day because I bought it all including a TWU College of Nursing t-shirt and TNSA t-shirt. Trust me, you will get plenty of opportunities to buy t-shirts. I have like 4 now because every class sells them to raise money for their pinning ceremony.

A stethoscope, you can wait on. Clinicals don't start until 6 weeks into the semester. Plus, a company comes out and you can use their models to decide which one you want. They say they give a discount but you can get them online for same price or cheaper. I am still using my cheap $12 one. They will also check you out a stethoscope to keep for the whole semester in assessment class!

On the day of orientation, you will get a packet with your name on it. It will have the price of your background check, your net test results, your clinical group assignment, and your tentative schedule! Good luck!

If you have any more questions, please send me a PM or email me through my profile information.

I would STRONGLY advise against buying the cheapest steth you can get. (IE the double tube model with the metal bell/diapraghm that the TWU bookstore sells) Instead I would buy the BEST ONE YOU CAN AFFORD. If you get a good one now, you will use it for the rest of your career, instead of buying several down the road.

Don't buy the top of the line Littman - you don't need that - you DO however need one that will let you hear the subtleties of murmers, consolidations, bruits and strange sounds - and a cheap one just won't pick them up as well. My good steth (14 years old!) has sometimes meant the dif between my hearing a murmer very clearly and NOT hearing it AT ALL!!!!

In fact - I know nurses who have discoverd MAJOR findings with their good quality steth that many others missed outright (IE a major cardiac defect in a newborn!)

If you are really strapped for cash, go put a Littman lightweight on layaway somewhere - they are about 60.00 I think.

And Christmas is coming!!!! Ask for a the Littman steth you want for Christmas!

That said - a stethoscope - no matter how expensive - is only as good as the ears and brain in the middle of it!
