Has anyone going to the TWU-Houston campus had to take HEP B shots? If so, where (if it's not a private DR.) and how much was it? I don't have insurance so I am trying to find a place that I can get them at a low cost. I have tried the county and city clinics and they do not offer them for adults.

Thanks :)

Ketcia,

Have you asked at the university clinic? Usually they are pretty low cost.

I am in FL, my health department gives them to adults for I think about $40 each, the price at the school clinic was about the same. Hep B shots have been discussed on allnurses before, you may get some good info and ideas about prices by doing a search. The price varies a little.

About books: be careful about buying books according to what the bookstore suggests. Go by your syllabi. Otherwise, you will buy tons of books you will never need. The good thing is, several of the books you use throughout the program. Going into Junior II semester, I have far fewer books to buy than for Junior I.

Hope this helps!!

This is good to know! Going by the syllabi, we only need a few books. Looking at the bookstore, there seem to be a lot more books "required" than the syllabi lists. My friends and I got kinda flustered by that and weren't sure what to do. Some of them just got the Pharmocology text and the others in which we were assigned reading. I haven't gotten mine yet--my funding requires me to submit the list, they pay and I pick 'em up. Unfortunately, I listed all of the books that the bookstore said were "required".

Any other tips for us Junior I's?

The books I used the most were Fundamentals of Nursing (Potter and Perry) and the Physical Exam and Health Assessment (unfortunately, you will know this book back and forward). Books that you need but only occasionally (it really may be possible to share with friends) are Pharmacology and Professional Nursing (for Experience class). Books for clinical (these are not needed right away because clinicals don't start for 6 weeks into semester) : Medical-Surgical Nursing, a care plan book of your choice, a drug guide of your choice and a Lab test book (Pagana and Pagana is the best).

The lab book for assessment was useless (they post everything on blackboard for you to print out for lab). The APA manual was very confusing and we only used it for one paper. My suggstion is to find a better guide or get the info you need off of the internet, or buy one copy and share with friends! There were a few more books suggested by the bookstore that were never used or even mentioned.

If anyone wants to PM me, I will give them tips on specific classes or answer any questions! Good luck!

You don't have to take it from them. As long as it it is from the American Heart Association (expires in 2 yrs). I called a couple of places around houston that offers CPR and they charge $30 bucks. I wanted to take it from TWU but then i have to pay another $10 parking fee. Plus the place I am taking is closer to my home and there are only 10 people taking the class including me. Mine is Jan 8th Saturday.

Hi Kristy,

I need to take the CPR class as well. Can you give me info regarding the class you are in? Saturday the 8th sounds great for me as I'm taking my final class during the holiday mini-semester. I will be entering TWU-Houston in the Spring.

Regards,

Marcy

Did Houston not give out syllabi yet? When are we supposed to buy our books?

I am assuming we will get our syllabi when we attend the nursing orientation on the 13th.
